Frome Writers’ Collective’s Writers in Residence challenge will take place again this year on Saturday July 1st in shops and cafés in and around central Frome.
A participant from the 2022 challenge, Mary Macarthur, said, “The event is now in its 18th year and always a lot of fun to take part in! Frome is a very much a writers’ town and Frome Writers’ Collective (FWC) serves it well with a range of opportunities and events such as this one.
“Entry is free, and open to all local people over 18 (first-timers are welcome), but places are limited so anyone interested in taking part is asked to email fromewriterscollective@gmail.com, for booking or details, asap.”
The writers will gather at an agreed place in town at 10am, where they will be given a mystery prompt as the stimulus for a short story. Stories are usually (though not always) written on laptops, then collected by one of the organisers between 1pm and 2pm.
This year’s winners will be announced at the Frome Festival Readers and Writers’ Day at the ECOS Amphitheatre, next to the Merlin Theatre, on Sunday 16th July.
Venues for 2023 are: Hunting Raven Books, Lo Rapitenc, Café La Strada, Frome Wholefoods, Nook, Projects, Eight Stony Street, Costa Coffee, French General Trading, Postscript, Cordero Lounge, Coffee#1, Cheese & Grain and Frome Library.
One of the coordinators, Gill Harry said, “We couldn’t run the competition without the generosity of Frome organisations and business, and we are extremely grateful to all of them for offering to host a writer (and in some cases, two) this year.
“So – if you’re out and about on the day and spot someone tapping away at one of the above locations, beside a Writer in Residence table sign – do give them a friendly smile!”
