THOUSANDS of fish have been introduced into the River Frome to replenish stock after over 1,600 fish were killed earlier this year by a slurry spill from a nearby farm.
The slurry spill fatally diminished the oxygen levels in the River Frome killing both major and minor species of fish.
Speaking at the time of the incident, the Environment Agency said, “The pollution entered the River Frome, replacing oxygen levels with ammonia over a 2km stretch through the town centre.”
However, the Environment Agency has this week announced it has introduced around 5,500 fish back into the River Frome at Welshmill and Whatcombe Fields.
Nick Ray from Friends of the River Frome said, “These were a mix of chub, roach and bream with plans to also stock dace into the river next year. Hopefully enough of these young fish will survive long enough to spawn and help fish populations recover.”
