Mendip District Council have approved planning for three new pay and play tennis courts for Frome that will replace the semi-derelict ones alongside Somerset Road.
Ruth Knagg, Frome Town Council’s community projects officer said, “The three old tennis courts in Victoria Park have not been fit to use properly for a long time. We are really pleased that the project to replace them is progressing. The new ones will be open to anyone to book and we will keep the price as affordable as possible.
The construction of the new courts follows a concerted fundraising campaign by Frome Selwood Tennis Club in partnership with Frome Town Council. The funding goal was reached in December 2014 and the target is for these three new courts to be available for use by April 2016.
John Price, Chair of Frome Selwood Tennis Club said, “We are a very active and friendly tennis club who believe in doing all we can to encourage and facilitate the sport, and are delighted that very soon Frome will have three brand new tennis courts which will be available to the public on a pay and play basis.
“Now, with these additional courts, we hope that many more people in the town will take up or re-visit tennis.’”
The courts will be located in the Mary Baily Playing Field adjacent to the tennis club .
