Tribute song for our frontline heroes
By Raya Franklin-Turner in Year 10
As our battle against Covid-19 continues, a band of talented people have worked together to create an uplifting song called “You Make It Better”. It is to say thank you to the key workers and raise funds for the NHS staff.
The group of musicians and producers have come together, all whilst self-isolating from their homes in Frome, London and the Midlands.
Here is a short interview with the song writer and one of the musicians, David Turner, who helped bring the ideas to life.
Q) When did you first get the idea for the song?
- When the corona virus crisis was first being reported on TV, I had the idea for the song. Around the same time, a few other musicians who had started the Frome Music Industry Network were also discussing what they could do to help.
Q) How long was the process from first writing the song to getting it uploaded for the public?
- It’s been just over a month in total. The song took about 48 hours to write, and the rest of the time has been recording, mixing and putting the video together.
Q) What’s the best bit been?
- Many parts have been fun, but working with so many talented performers and seeing the final video (which was put together by Jason Flinter) had to be the best parts.
Q) The trickiest?
- Definitely trying to meet the tight deadlines!
Q) What’s the theme of the song?
- The theme of the song is about being inspired by our heroes and standing behind them. I hope that’s a message that rings true.
Q) What advice would you give to anyone wanting to be a songwriter/musician?
- Go for it! If it’s a dream of yours then chase it. Do it for the joy and not for success or riches.
Q) Finally, is there anything you’d like to say to the people who worked on the project alongside you?
- A big thank you to all of them, but especially Will Angeloro who spent many days mixing and building the audio.
Although most of us at Frome College see Will around the campus helping with a variety of IT issues, some may not even know that he’s been producing music for years and regularly uses his skills to help put on shows and performances as well as sharing his talent with students working on music productions. He’s certainly done an incredible job mixing this track!
“You Make It Better” is on all social media platforms now. Take a few minutes to listen to it and say thank you to the people who are keeping our country running at the moment. If you are able, please donate!
