Tributes have been paid to former Frome MP David Warburton, who has died at the age of 59.
Mr Warburton was found dead at his London home in Chelsea on 26th August, with police confirming that his death was being treated as “unexpected but not suspicious.”
He served as Conservative MP for Somerton and Frome from 2015 until 2023, when he resigned following allegations of sexual harassment and drug use. His resignation triggered a by-election, which was won by Liberal Democrat Sarah Dyke.
Leader of Frome Town Council, Cllr Fiona Barrows, said he would be remembered locally for his role in helping to secure the town hall as a civic home.
She said, “We are saddened to hear of the death of David Warburton, who served as the Member of Parliament for Somerton and Frome from 2015 to 2023. Public service is never easy. Representing a community and putting your head above the parapet takes courage and commitment. During his years in office, David worked hard to raise issues that mattered locally — from rural broadband and transport to supporting pubs and cider and cheese makers.
“On behalf of the town, we extend our sincere condolences to his family and friends at this difficult time.”
A Metropolitan Police spokesperson said, “Police were called by the London Ambulance Service at 10.47hrs on Tuesday 26th August to an address at Chelsea Crescent, Sands End. A man in his 50s was found dead at the scene. His next of kin have been informed. The death is being treated as unexpected but not suspicious.”
