Frome’s very own brass band is welcoming the community to attend an open rehearsal night on Wednesday 5th March.
Frome Town Band has been running in the town for over 100 years and is an ingrained part of Frome’s history, playing at various events and holding their own concerts.
The band also runs a schools’ project and there are beginner and intermediate sections that anyone can join at any level.
“Whilst we would like experienced players to join us, we also want to invest in the children and young people and people who want to learn,” explained band member June Walsham.
“I started the band by being an adult player and learning from nothing; I couldn’t even read music,” says June.
On the night of the open rehearsal, visitors can bring their own instruments or use the ones provided and do not need experience in reading music. If people wish to become more permanent members for £9 a month, they can then borrow the instruments.
While everyone is invited to the open rehearsal, June said the band would really like to attract people who might have played in the band in the past.
“We also want to attract those who haven’t played for ages but want to come back to playing and also for the players who feel confident,” says June. “We continually need to grow if we are to survive.”
Sharing one of Frome Town Band’s ‘proudest moments,’ June said, “It was when we performed the snowman during the Christmas before last. We as a band worked really hard, and we practised for a long time, and we managed to play the score along with the film.
“It is really difficult because it’s half an hour of complete continuous music otherwise the snowman’s nose doesn’t fall off at the right time.”
The open rehearsal will run from 7.15pm at Frome College, visit the Frome Town Band website https://www.frometownband.com/
