UK Maths Challenge

On Thursday 1 February, 140 Frome College students came from Years 9, 10 and 11, sat the UK Maths Challenge.

This national event is run by the UK Maths Trust based at Leeds University.   The Maths Challenges are lively and intriguing multiple choice question papers, which are designed to stimulate interest in Maths.

Entrants can be awarded a Gold, Silver or Bronze Certificate.  Results will be announced in a couple of months’ time.

  • TV antiques expert returns to Melksham for valuation day. Local antique expert Paul Martin, presenter of the BBC TV show Flog It!, returned to Melksham to host another free valuation day, following a successful visit in May. Paul said, “It’s wonderful to be back here in Melksham; it’s my hometown in a way, because I only live down the road in Beanacre.” He shared some of his most memorable finds for the day, ranging from jewellery to first-edition books. He said, “I’ve seen a campaign chest and other medals from an officer who was in the Crimean War and received the Victoria Cross, so that was really nice - proper antiques!   • Help needed to run the town’s annual Christmas event. Volunteers are needed to help get the town ready for Christmas and help out with planning the Christmas Market & Lights Switch On event, which is due to be held on Saturday 7th December. Planning is now full speed ahead, with local stallholders and entertainers registering their interest. However, due to the ever-growing popularity of this event, the team behind organising the festivities is also looking for enthusiastic and dedicated volunteers to join them and support the smooth running of the day. The Melksham Christmas Lights Team will also be working their magic once again on the town centre lights displays, including the incredible town hall illuminations and Christmas tree.   • Community sports field benefits from major funding boost. The condition of a sports field in Bowerhill will be improved with the help of a grant from the Football Foundation. Melksham Without Parish Council (MWPC) secured a grant of £57,812, which will be used to address longstanding drainage issues at Bowerhill Sports Field that have caused numerous football matches—both adult and youth—to be cancelled in recent seasons. With this funding, the parish council can now carry out essential maintenance to enhance the field’s overall condition, ensuring it remains a valuable asset for the entire community.   • New breakfast initiative at Melksham Food Bank. A new initiative offering cooked breakfasts for those in need has been launched by the Melksham Food Bank team following a grant from the town council. Melksham Town Council has awarded the food bank a grant of £700 to fund the service, which will include two sessions for cooked breakfasts, as well as a special Christmas lunch for their clients. A trustee of the food bank, Alan McFall, said, “The meals will be especially welcome as the colder weather arrives and are an opportunity for clients and volunteers to sit down, have a chat and enjoy a meal together.   • Rising drumming star showcases talents at UK Drum Show. Melksham’s rising drumming star, Joe Thomas, showcased his talents on the main stage of this year’s UK Drum Show. Joe, 16, delivered two performances on the show’s first-ever Mini Main Stage last month, after beating thousands of other drummers from across the country to secure the spot. His mum, Amy Thomas, said he played Bound to the Burn by Counterparts and 87 by Polyphia to an ‘exceptionally high standard.’ “I think I held my breath throughout the whole performance out of nerves,” says Amy. Throughout the weekend, Joe explored the show, visiting various drum company stands and trying out a range of high-quality drum kits. He also attended masterclasses from renowned drummers, including Nic Collins (son of Phil Collins), Chris Coleman, Aquiles Priester, Bernard Purdie and Chris Turner. Joe had a memorable encounter with Chris Turner, drummer for metalcore band Oceans Ate Alaska, who came to watch Joe’s performance after chatting with him.   • Volunteers recognised for Girlguiding dedication in London. Two Melksham Girlguiding volunteers attended a VIP event in London’s Leicester Square last month to celebrate their long-standing commitment to Girlguiding. Christine Glover and Pam Rainsley were invited to the annual awards presentation in London to recognise the voluntary work they have undertaken for the Girlguiding movement over the last 40 years. Christine has been with Wiltshire South Guides since 1983 and has also been in British Girlguiding Overseas in Germany and Saudi Arabia.   • Melksham couple fundraising for Peru trek in aid of Dorothy House. A Melksham couple are working hard to raise funds to take part in a trek to Peru in support of the local hospice, Dorothy House. Liza Pinching and her husband, David, aim to raise £12,000 to fund the trek in April 2026. The funds raised will go to Dorothy House, where Liza works, to provide vital support for the hospice’s palliative and end-of-life care, as well as bereavement counselling for families. “I’m raising the money to put back into the hospice care,” Liza said. “As a charity, we only get a small amount of NHS funding, so the more money I can raise, the better it will be.   • A fresh start for Melksham Oak with new senior leadership team. The new senior leadership team at Melksham Oak Community School say they are looking forward to helping the school flourish and encouraging students to have high aspirations. The town’s only secondary school was in the public eye last year following parents’ complaints and teacher strikes; however, the new team is now looking forward to a fresh start. New executive headteacher David Cooper has taken over the leadership of the school from former headteacher Haris Hussain.   • Police call for witness after elderly man mugged outside Sainsbury’s. Wiltshire Police are calling for witnesses or anyone who has information to come forward after an elderly man was mugged outside of Sainsbury’s at the end of last month. The man, who is in his 80s, said he was approached by a woman at around 2.30pm on Saturday 28th September, claiming to be collecting money for charity. A statement from Wiltshire Police said, “He gave her some cash and she grabbed him into a hug. “After entering the store and when trying to pay for his shopping he realised that around £60 was missing. “The woman is described as a white woman, around 5ft 6ins tall of a slim build.
