2023 was another exciting year for all the children and staff at Vallis First School.
At Vallis, every effort is made to make learning relevant and meaningful for the children. Visitors included a vet, an engineer and an archaeologist.
The Key Stage 1 children excitedly looked for physical and human features in the local area as part of their geography topic and used their enquiry and reasoning skills to look for clues to think about when buildings around Frome might have been built. The older children enjoyed a very exciting history day discovering more about life as an ancient Egyptian.
A visit from a teacher who taught at Vallis 40 years ago really brought our local history topic alive, telling the children how the building has changed since she first started teaching in the school. Vallis First School is an amazing building which is rich in history.
We celebrated British Science week in March. Children of all ages were involved in exciting, practical science investigations. Protecting an egg and then dropping it from a height was great fun as was designing and making rockets. Science at Vallis is always exciting!
Sports day was another highlight. The children engaged in a wide variety of sporting events in our school field. This was one of many opportunities when parents are invited to come and see their children in action. Many parents also enjoyed a morning helping their children make hats as part of a design and technology project.
Over the summer, the staff and parents worked hard to create a new outside area for the youngest children in the school. This beautifully designed new outdoor classroom gives the children opportunities to explore, play and stimulate their imagination. Sensory opportunities are planned to explore water and other natural materials,
One of our school rules is ‘care.’ Throughout the year, activities are planned to ensure that kindness and caring for each other is a priority throughout the school. As a school we are linked with The Good Heart Cafe in Frome. Children from the school participated in Frome Kindness week. Anti bullying is always a key focus for the school and during anti-bullying week we explored ways in which we can be anti-bullying superheroes and role play activities helped the children to understand what bullying is and how we can always be kind and caring.
Our exciting year ended with Christmas performances and Christmas parties. We are very grateful to the mayor of Frome for being our special visitor at our parties.
