A WHEELCHAIR-adapted car is now available to take passengers to local appointments, as part of a new local community service named Active Drivers. The charity is now looking for more volunteer drivers to join the team.

Active Drivers was formed following the merger of Frome-based Active and In Touch and Frome Community Cars. The service has recently been extended as a result of the donation by P DJ Discos of the use of a wheelchair-adapted car. Five drivers are trained in driving the vehicle, which is primarily aimed at ensuring people in the town and local area are able to access doctors and hospital appointments.
A spokesperson said, “This service can only take place with the invaluable help from volunteer drivers who will be able to claim a fuel allowance. If you have any spare time and would like to become part of this team please contact enquiries@activeandintouch.org for further details or ring 07596 591391. Your support would be greatly appreciated.”
All Active Driver cars can be booked by anyone in the BA11 area for journeys to any local activity such as shopping and lunch clubs. Those booking must be registered and must give 48 hours’ notice.A contribution of a £3 booking fee + 60p per mile is requested to cover drivers’ expenses with 50% discounts if you have a bus pass. The service is run by Morag Stuart and all journeys are made by volunteers who all have a DBS. To contact Morag please phone: 07596 591391 or email: communitydrivers@activeandintouch.org.
As well as volunteers for the new Active Drivers service, Active and In Touch are seeking volunteer befrienders. For more information, ring 07375 336733 or 07468 859453.
