49 members attended the March meeting of Frome ladies.
Club chairman Brenda Palmer introduced her new 1-55p raffle, which would take place during the tea break and would give members a chance to win a chicken for 1p.
Brenda then welcomed Jane Clark who gave a talk entitled ‘Joy’s War’. It was a true love story and account of her mother’s time in World War 2. It ended very sadly because although Joy and her husband Tony survived the war, Tony died after a diving accident on their second wedding anniversary and he never lived to see his child Jane’s stepsister.
Jane has written Joy’s life story in a book entitled ‘Sister Sunshine’. She read several passages from the book and also brought along medals and photographs belonging to her mother. Chris Cornaby gave the vote of thanks.
After the break Brenda Palmer informed members that the club had been given a gavel made by Di Neale’s husband.
It was announced to members that as no-one else had come forward to be treasurer, Florence would take on this role as well as producing the monthly bulletin.
The charity for the year was then voted on. There were three nominations: Frome carnival clubs, Fair Frome and the Memorial Theatre boiler fund. The winner by a very large majority was the boiler fund.
Brenda outlined ideas for fund raising, these included: the extra monthly raffle, a stall at the carnival fete in June and monthly sales table for vegetables, plants and produce. The first winner of the extra raffle was Cilla Cox.
