  • Thousands line streets to welcome Christmas in Frome Thousands of residents lined the streets for Frome’s spectacular annual Christmas lights switch-on and lantern parade. The town was illuminated as handmade lanterns, crafted by local people with support from Frome Lanterns, paraded down from North Parade to the beat of local band Jamma de Samba for the annual event on Friday 21st November. The switch-on was led by Mayor Anita Collier. “This night wasn’t just about flipping a switch, it was a celebration of what makes Frome so special – creativity, compassion and a shared sense of belonging,” said Cllr Collier. The Festive Food Court was alive with music from talented local artists throughout the evening, including performances from DJ Viner, Frome Town Band and Frome Street Bandits.   • Frome Times deliverer remembered for community-minded spirit A dedicated and long-standing Frome Times deliverer, known for his contribution to the community, has died aged 73. Chris Hill started delivering the Frome Times over 10 years ago as a way to keep healthy and active after being diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease, a progressive neurological condition that affects movement, which he lived with for over 14 years. During that time Chris kept active alongside delivering the paper, going to an exercise class in Frome, a walking group and a boxing class in Radstock. Chris also raised funds for Parkinson’s UK through sponsored walks including walking 14 miles from Bath to Frome.   • Urgent town council meeting to discuss situation at Badgers Hill An extraordinary council meeting of Frome Town Council has been called for Wednesday 10th December to discuss the running of Badgers Hill, home of Frome Town FC. As interest in the meeting is expected to be high, booking is essential via the link at the foot of the article. Councillors agreed to a commercial proposal from newly formed company, Badgers Hill Limited, to take on the lease of Badgers Hill in July. To enable the 2025 football season to proceed, a temporary ‘tenancy at will’ agreement was reached to allow for the completion of legal paperwork. As of December 2025, the council says the lease has not been signed and no rent has been received from Badgers Hill Ltd. The extraordinary meeting has been called to discuss urgent next steps.   • Frome Town Council sets out bold new plan A new ambitious council plan has been launched by Frome Town Council to strengthen the town’s social, economic and environmental resilience. The plan follows the formal devolution of assets and land to the town from Somerset Council, as a result of their financial crisis, and plots a path for the town council for the next two years. Leader of the council, Cllr Fiona Barrows, said, “This plan builds on our work over the last three years responding to urgent challenges, such as the cost-of-living crisis and the threat of losing key local assets. With this new plan, we’re shifting to securing longer-term, sustainable impact across the town. It also introduces measurable goals for the first time, as we aim for improved participation, greater transparency and accountability across all areas of our work. “Frome has always done things differently. This plan is about holding onto our creativity and agility while stepping up for Frome, to look after our new responsibilities and assets, continuing to make tangible improvements to the town. We can’t fill every gap left by national and county cuts but by working together as a community, we can continue to make Frome a town that truly works for everyone.” Read more on our website.   • Frome paraclimber achieves national success A Frome woman has achieved national success, winning first place in the British Paraclimbing Championships and third in the Paraclimbing World Cup in France. Charly Andrew, who is part of the GB Paraclimbing Team, walks with a crutch due to limited movement in her left leg after having a quarter of her pelvis replaced when she was 16, following a diagnosis of bone cancer. She began climbing in 2015 after an ex-colleague introduced her to the sport. Last year, she started competing at a national level in the British Paraclimbing Championships. This year, she achieved first place in her category at the championship in Edinburgh. She then flew to Laval, France, to compete in the World Cup, where she came third in her category. “It’s still a bit of a wild feeling for me to be competing at all, let alone placing,” said Charly. “The British Nationals last year was my first serious competition, so it feels great to have pushed myself to show up last year and really cool to have won this year. Here are some of them: Aside from their many other duties, Fiona Barrows, as our leader, demonstrates an amazing can-do attitude with an extraordinary grasp of all the work we do, managing it all with enormous enthusiasm. Steve Tanner, Chair of the Planning Committee, has immense knowledge of his area and works closely with developers to get the best result for Frome. Mark Dorrington is lead councillor for open spaces and does a remarkable job, working with the rangers to make the best of all our parks and green spaces. Max Wide brings enormous experience of working with other councils up and down the country, so has great insight what works well and how best to achieve it. Read more on our website.   • Drivers urged to learn updated Highway Code after incident A pedestrian in Frome is urging drivers to be aware of the updated Highway Code after she was knocked into at a junction. Barbara Clark, who is a resident of the Keyford area, was bumped into whilst attempting to cross the road from Christchurch Street East to Wesley Slope, resulting in a bruised shin and being ‘sprawled’ on the bonnet of the driver’s car last month. “I started crossing and he moved forward and bumped into me,” said Barbara. “Fortunately, it only bruised my shin but it could have broken my leg. He said that he didn’t see me but I was wearing a bright red coat.” Barbara believes the incident was caused by the driver being unaware of the 2022 Highway Code changes, which state that traffic should give way to pedestrians crossing or waiting to cross at a junction.   • Frome Town Band to perform Wallace and Gromit spectacular A community band in Frome is inviting residents to their annual Christmas concert, a Wallace and Gromit spectacular. Frome Town Band will deliver a musical evening for the whole community, accompanying a screening of the classic animated adventure Wallace and Gromit’s Grand Day Out, on Saturday 20th December at 7pm. A member of the band, June, said, “This special evening promises festive spirit, heartwarming music, and family fun, all in a joyful, family-friendly atmosphere. Enjoy seasonal favourites and a very special twist for all ages. “Audiences will be treated to an imaginative blend of film and live music, as the band brings the much-loved story to life in real time, guaranteed to delight both children and adults alike.” Read more on our website.
