A celebration of the written and spoken word is to take place in Frome next month.
The Frome Word sees a whole host of events taking place over the weekend of 5th, 6th and 7th September.
The extravaganza has been organised by the Frome Writers Collective (FWC), the not-for-profit initiative launched earlier this year that aims to help and support aspiring and established writers in the local and surrounding areas.
The three-day event begins on Friday night at the Three Swans, King Street, with ‘Irreverent Conversations’, which sees script in hand readings of work written by the Frome Scriptwriters Group. Those attending are asked to come dressed as their favourite fictional characters.
This is followed on Saturday with a series of daytime workshops at Frome Library and Cheese & Grain. These will include subjects such as ‘How to Get an Agent’, ‘Blogging’, and ‘Getting Published’ and are being run by local and established writers such as John Payne, Alison Clink and Jill Harris.
The Saturday evening is then turned over to a poetry slam – a competition where poets are judged on original poems read or recited – at the Archangel. The event is being hosted by Liv Torc from the Hip Yak Poetry Shack and has prizes that include a coveted spot on Frome FM.
Sunday sees a series of events which takes the written and spoken word into the community. This includes Word in the Street, where several writers will be ensconced in various shops in Cheap Street and have two hours to write a themed story, and Words in the Community, again at the Frome Library, which includes talks and workshops on Storytelling and other related topics.
Frome Word director, David Lassman said, “This is going to be a wonderful celebration of the written and spoken word. Whereas literary festivals can put some people off with their possible elitism, Frome word aims to bring words and writers back into the community where they belong.
“I did hear from someone the other day that there are apparently more published writers in Frome per square foot than anywhere else in the country, even London, so what better place than here to celebrate the raw material.”
And if that is not enough to satisfy your appetite, Frome Writers Collective will be making a special trip to Mells on the Monday (8th) to visit Siegfred Sassoon’s grave and to celebrate what would have been his 128th birthday. Anyone is welcome to join them.
