Young members of Frome Canoe Club have been clearing the river after being shocked by the amount of rubbish they find every week.
Members of the club used their Wednesday session on Wednesday 25th July to take to the river to clear away rubbish left on the banks and in the water – mostly take-away cartons and plastic bottles. They took to clearing it whilst practising their paddling skills.
They started at the weir, carried on through the town centre, up through Willow Vale and beyond, all armed with litter pickers, bin bags and high spirits.
They set off in their canoes to make the stretch of river clean and pleasant again.
They turned what could have been a disheartening task into lots of fun by having a prize offered for whichever team collected the most rubbish. In the end they all collected so much that Chris, their coach, had to reward all members with bags of sweets from the tuck shop.
Chris Wilde, coach and committee member said, “I’m really proud of the enthusiasm shown by our young paddlers, everyone helped out and they all were happy to have made a difference to our local environment.”
