FROME’S world famous Cobble Wobble is set to return this year on Sunday 16th of December, with a special Christmas twist.
The annual Cobble Wobble is a 179-yard cycle sprint up Catherine Hill, with cyclists competing to become the next ‘King of the Cobbles’.
Last year, over 3,000 people took to the streets to cheer on over 220 cyclists who made their way up Catherine Hill in a variety of fancy dress outfits.
22-year-old Lewis Lacey was crowned the ‘King of the Cobbles’ and it is hoped that top riders from all across the globe will turn up to the event.
Entry to the Cobble Wobble will open on Thursday 1st of November.
Organiser Andrew Denham said, “There will be a Christmas theme to this year’s Cobble Wobble. I would advise people to go to the website and register to receive updates about what time registration will be open from. Last year, the event was full up within the first hour.
“The great thing about the Cobble Wobble is you do not have to be a professional to take part. You can come along and have a laugh, while supporting a local event.”
While Frome has set the standard for the authentic uphill cycle ride, other areas cross the country are mimicking the Cobble Wobble, which has even gained international attention, with similar events set up in America.
The Frome Cobble Wobble has been graced by cyclists from all over the country, with people travelling from as far as Australia to compete in the event.
This year marks the fourth anniversary of the event, which was originally organised to coincide with the Tour of Britain cycle race that passed through Frome in 2009. Since then, the event has grown in popularity and has had to extend its entry places to accommodate the high demand from entrants.
