A LOCAL science initiative in Frome is offering the chance for young children and their families to reconnect with nature while exploring the fascinating world of science.
Science Boost CIC will be restarting ‘Seedlings to Saplings’, a science and nature playgroup, this month and is looking for new families to join them, particularly those who may have less access to open spaces and nature-play over lockdown.
Company owner, Katie Marshall explains why they are running this group. She says, “We want to ensure that every child in Frome has a chance to explore the world around them in a meaningful way, which is the foundation of scientific thought and exploration.
“Children are natural scientists; they don’t need encouragement to experiment. They just need someone to explore their ideas with, and someone to clear up the mess they make after – that’s where we come in!”
The group meets on Tuesday mornings in the wooded area between Frome Canoe Club and Welshmill playground and is delivered by two qualified teachers. Activities are designed especially for children in the early years, with plenty of opportunities to interact with their caregivers as well as meeting new friends.
Local mum Amie Opie says, “It’s a really lovely group and it’s been wonderful watching all the children learn about the natural world, often I learn things too! I feel like it’s given my son and I an opportunity to just relax and have fun together, and we often talk about the things we did for days after. Being outside really helps improve his mood, it’s a good way to get ideas for things to do out in nature, even if it’s raining.”
Seedlings to Saplings playgroup is aimed at children aged 2-4 years, and funded spaces are available to any family that may need it, thanks to the generous support of local companies such as Pearns Tree Services and Frome Town Council. All enquiries regarding funded spaces are assessed on individual circumstances and handled in confidence.
