The Merlin Theatre’s popular youth groups are starting again following half-term, after the refurbishment of the auditorium.
Hip Hop classes (not to be confused with Street dance) ran by professional dancers Morton Mitchard and Craig Marsh begin on Monday 22nd February 5pm-6.30pm. These classes are very popular with boys, although the girls are beginning to catch on that this dance style is not only wicked, but great for building body strength.
Students will learn the art of popping and locking, and will be encouraged to choreograph and develop their own styles. This group is for those aged 8+.
The fun Saturday morning Drama Group, 10am – 12 noon, for ages 8-12 is now in its 20th year. Professional actor and director Georgiana Neison-Toy has recently taken over the class and is about to work on an exciting new project with the group, so a perfect time to start.
Glee Club on a Tuesday afternoon, 4.30-6pm is perfect for those that like to do it all; sing, dance and act. Led by vocal coach and drama teacher, Dora Bishop, the group work together learning new routines towards a presentation at the end of the term. This group is for those aged 7-12.
For those aged 12-18, there is youth theatre on Wednesday nights from 5.15pm-7pm. Led by local performer Ryan Hughes, the group try different styles and ways of working for each new project. Recent productions include Antigone and The Little Shop of Horrors.
All of the groups are informal and for fun, however students learn many skills without even realising. Team work, listening, leadership, developing creativity, building confidence and of course making new friends are just some of the benefits.
The groups usually cost £99 per 11-week term; however this is the perfect time to give it a try as this is a half-term session for £45. Taster sessions are available before you commit to a term. All groups will be working towards a public summer showcase.
