Eleven year-old Oakfield Academy student Kieran Merritt successfully completed the 5k part of the Frome Half Marathon in memory of his great granddad.
Kieran raised over £500, which he has donated to the Marshfield Ward at Frome Community Hospital.
Before the race Kieran, and mum Debbie, had returned to the ward where great granddad had been cared for by the nursing staff last year. Kieran had told Matron Hayley Hughes he wanted to donate something special for use by other patients on the ward.
The Matron, Hayley Hughes said, “With improvements planned for additional patient comfort, it is intended to create a ‘patient and visitor enhancement area’ in the reception area of the ward, and we are delighted that through Kieran’s wonderful endeavours we will be able to procure a specialist item of equipment, which will be acknowledged to Kieran and his granddad.”
The completion of the enhancement area in the autumn will be announced on the Friends of Frome Hospital website. www.friendsoffromehospital.org.uk
