FROME Lions’ annual Sporting Dinner, held at Elmhay Park in Orchardleigh on 1st February, raised an impressive £23,000 for the Bath Cancer Unit Support Group.
Frome Lions raised £11,500 at the dinner, which was match-funded by the Richard Oatley Foundation, bringing the total raised on the night to £23,000. The Richard Oatley Foundation provides funding to a small number of specific charities that have a direct impact on the lives of people living and working in Somerset and Wiltshire.
The guest speaker on the night was the three-time Olympic Games medallist and world record-holding javelin thrower, Steve Backley OBE.
A Frome Lions spokesperson said, “We were pleased to present a cheque for £11,500 to the chairman of the Bath Cancer Unit Support Group, Mike Taylor.
“Also present on the night was Kevin Butcher, CEO of the Richard Oatley Foundation who had generously agreed to match fund the proceeds raised by the Lions, which means the magnificent sum of £23,000 was donated to the charity.
“Mike said that the money raised from the evening, along with the match funding from the Richard Oatley Foundation, would go towards the purchase of one of three OmniBoards which cost £38,000 each. These ensure that the patient is securely immobilised during radiotherapy.”
