Highly-anticipated festival cricket fixture

August 2, 2018

The most eagerly awaited sporting event of the last 106 years took place on 15th July 2018. The World Cup final? The Wimbledon men’s final? No. It was the re-match of the Bax Broughtonians v Broughton Gifford cricket match on the common at Broughton Gifford.
Martin Bax reports, “The fixture was first played in 1912 when the Bax Broughtonians had emerged victorious in a close and low-scoring game.
“There was then a hiatus of 105 years, when the fixture was re-established in 2017. In 1912 the Broughtonian team included the brothers Clifford and Arnold Bax, as well as the war poet Edward Thomas whose anniversary was celebrated at various events at the 2017 Frome Festival.
“In 2017, six related Baxes made the starting line-up, while the instigator of the event, Martin Bax, was twelfth man. The Broughton Gifford team included Tom Gerrish as Captain, whose great-great-grandfather and his two brothers had played in the previous encounter in 1912. The result, in a very high scoring game, was victory (once more) to the Bax Broughtonians, the scores being 235 for 6 wickets versus 190 for 8 wickets in the 40 over match.
“Broughton Gifford demanded a replay and as they were reluctant to wait another 105 years for the opportunity to get their revenge, another fixture was arranged for the aforementioned 15th July 2018.
“While there was some consternation that the fixture may have clashed with an important football match, in the event the England team was persuaded to lose the match against Croatia in order for the 106 year-old fixture to go ahead.
“Conditions for the match this year were splendid with the hot summer producing a good batting wicket and a super fast outfield. It certainly seemed a pitch to bat first and James Bax, captain of the Broughtonians, seemed delighted when the opposing captain, Mark Mullis, won the toss and invited his team to bat first.
“However, he had not reckoned with the strength of the Broughton Gifford bowling attack, nor the quality of the team’s catching and fielding. Wickets fell at regular intervals and the Bax team’s confidence took a knock when star batsman, Mathew Bax, fell to a stunning catch for only 28. Obviously the Broughton Gifford team are proponents of vigorous mid-week catching practice because this was the first of several difficult chances taken very comfortably.
“The innings was put back on track for a while by Nigel Arbury and debutante, Charlotte Bax, whose baseball training proved effective in the circumstances. When she went for 17, the rest of the team could only mount token resistance. Olivia Bax, in particular, was denied her half–century when the last wicket, taken by Emma Putnam, fell and she was still on nought not out.
“As a result, the Bax team could only muster a rather disappointing 107 and only managed to bat 25 of their allotted 40 overs. In comparison, Broughton Gifford’s openers, Tom Gerrish and Tom Vincent, made batting look relatively easy. They got to 58 without loss when tea was taken. This was despite the very tight opening spell from Josh Stanley whose 4 overs conceded only 7 runs.
“The tea interval involved a spell at the Bell on the Common and the refreshment on offer there appeared to reinvigorate the Bax attack. Four wickets fell quickly including 3 from Paul Tollet and 1 from Tom Norsworthy. However, the Bax total was never going to be enough and in the event, Broughton Gifford earned their victory – and revenge for 106 years of hurt – with an emphatic 6 wicket win.
“As a result the two teams were able to reconvene at the Bell somewhat earlier than anticipated, to celebrate this memorable sporting rivalry to everyone’s satisfaction. “

  • Frome care home approved despite opposition

A care home for 75 people will be built on land off Marston Road despite local objections.

Plans for the two-storey care home were submitted last year and include the construction of an electrical substation, parking, and alterations to existing access. The application was approved at Somerset Council’s Planning Meeting East on 3rd February.

Residents and councillors raised concerns about the size and scale of the development overlooking neighbouring properties, light spill, flooding and environmental risks, excess traffic, inadequate parking, and access for emergency vehicles.

  • Community wakes up the trees in annual Weylands Wassail.

The rain did not stop the community from turning out for the annual Weylands Wassail on Sunday 8th February.

Residents gathered at the Weylands Orchard for the centuries-old practice of wassailing which aims to encourage a good harvest and bring people together in community at the coldest and darkest time of the year.

Mayor of Frome Cllr Anita Collier said, “It was opened by Frome’s Town Crier, Martin Scott, reminding us all of the good things that happen in Frome and a great atmosphere with much banging of pots and pans designed to wake the trees from their winter sleep. I was charged with blessing the apple trees with cider and reciting a rhyme in the hope of an abundant crop this year. Offerings were gifted to the trees in the shape of toast attached to ribbons and the orchard was ablaze with colour."

  • Library Friends marks first anniversary

A group supporting Frome’s library has marked its first anniversary.

Friends of Frome Library (FOFL), a Community Interest Company (CIC), was set up last year by volunteers and library users to fundraise and advocate for the much-loved public space.

Chairperson Kerry Meech said the group has had a busy winter. “We’ve been fundraising and chatting with librarians about their wish lists for this year. Thanks to the generosity of our supporters, we’ve been able to secure much-needed replacement equipment, including a safe and secure Lego storage unit for the popular Lego club and replacement props for the free, librarian-led Toddler Time and Baby Boogie sessions,” she said.

  • Valentine lamp lighting ceremony returns this week

The annual Valentine lamp lighting ceremony is being held this Saturday 14th February at the top of Catherine Hill.

The ceremony sees Frome’s famous Valentine gas lamp lit by Eddie Young, the lamplighter, who will be dressed in period costume and light the lamp using a traditional lamplighter’s pole and read the dedication to St Valentine.

Selected poems, on the theme of love, will be performed by the members of the Frome Writers Collective Poetry Group.

The event will start at 5.30pm when a Queen of Hearts rocket will be set off and explode in a red heart shape in the sky above the lamp.

  • Hopkins strike seals eighth straight home win for Frome

Albie Hopkins’ close-range strike bagged all three points for the Robins, Frome’s eighth consecutive home victory.

The number 11 had a goal ruled out at the 30-minute mark, his diving effort was flagged by the linesman; after an exchange in words from both Ali and Collier, the goal was disallowed.

Yet with the difficult conditions, all three points head to Danny Greaves’ men and with the win secured, this kept the 11-point gap from Malvern Town in second place.

Prior to this tie, Frome travelled to West Bristol as they faced Bristol Manor Farm and took all the available points at The Creek.

  • Safety concerns raised over Frome’s ‘pothole epidemic’

Residents in Frome are warning that local roads are becoming increasingly dangerous as potholes grow in number and size.

Over 100 residents have contacted the Frome Times with their concerns, with several people reporting damage to vehicles, and one child fracturing his arm after hitting a pothole while cycling.

Somerset Councillor Adam Boyden, for Frome North, said the region is facing a ‘pothole epidemic’ and urged residents to keep reporting them.

He said, “There are over 3,500 potholes in the system to be dealt with. Nearly 1,000 were reported last weekend. It is just getting worse, it is a bad time with the rain, it’s been cold. On Bath Road there is just a long line of potholes there. It is worth reporting them and not complaining on social media.”

A 10-year-old boy, James Yearsley, fractured his arm after hitting a pothole while riding his bike on Woodhayes Road in December.

His mum, who said the injury required surgery, said, “I reported this straight away to the Highways Department at Somerset Council as I was so worried someone else would get hurt. They have made a very shoddy repair to the hole which took about three weeks. I am still waiting for a response from their insurance team with regards to compensation.”
