£3m boost for Somerset’s care heroes, as County Hall is lit up in their honour

County Hall is illuminated.

SOMERSET’S heroic care providers will receive an extra £3 million to help them support vulnerable people during the coronavirus pandemic.

County Hall is illuminated.

The one-off payment will see contracted providers receive a 10% increase in fees over a 3-month period, which will help with additional costs brought about by the crisis.

Somerset County Council has also extended a heartfelt thank you to carers and will be lighting up County Hall in green and blue in their honour, as well paying tribute to council staff, the NHS, and other key workers and volunteers who are stepping up to keep the county running.

Councillor David Huxtable, Somerset County Council’s Cabinet Member for Adult Social Care, has written to care providers to thank them for the “exceptional care, love and support” they have shown to older and disabled people in every part of the county.

“Without you doing what you do, we could not protect the NHS, we could not give older and disabled people the lives, and sometimes, sadly, the good deaths that they deserve,” he wrote.

“There are many heroes emerging in this crisis, from nurses and doctors, to bus drivers, refuse collectors and school teachers and volunteers.

But for now, I want to thank you, on behalf of the Leader of the Council, the Cabinet and all Councillors and residents of Somerset for the work you are doing every single day.

“When this is over, we must never underestimate the value that social care offers society, not only in times of crisis, but every single day, in caring for our most vulnerable.”

Director of Adults Services, Mel Lock said: “We are truly humbled by the work of our excellent care sector and want everyone to recognise the vital role it plays in supporting Somerset’s most vulnerable residents. We must also recognise the fantastic work of our health partners and all their staff.

“We hope this £3m uplift will help providers cover additional costs brought about by the coronavirus pandemic.

“We are absolutely committed to supporting our care sector, and this new payment is in addition to a substantial uplift which Somerset County Council had already agreed for fee levels for 2020/21.”

A fundraiser has been launched by local volunteers to provide a special Christmas Day for residents and families from all backgrounds who are struggling financially, as well as anyone who feels lonely around that time of year.

The appeal aims to raise £3,000 for the annual Christmas Get Together, which will provide 200 two-course meals with all the trimmings, along with individual gifts, transport to and from venues, carol singing, games, entertainment and company on the day.

The Christmas Get Together began 18 years ago when the community of Frome wanted to create an event on Christmas Day for people who would otherwise be on their own. It is run by a collaboration of local people, businesses and volunteers who donate their time.

  • Christmas stories at local pub

A Frome storyteller will share three Christmas stories he has written with audiences at a local pub this month.

Mike Rogers will share his stories at The Crown Inn in Keyford on Wednesday 10th December, at 7.30pm.

“I have chosen three stories from those I have written over the past three decades and more, which will leave you happier after you have heard them. All you have to do in response is take that happiness away with you and share it with others. "

Frome RFC 24 – 8 Swanage & Wareham

Frome RFC welcomed Swanage & Wareham RFC to The Lane on Saturday and, with the visitors sitting at the top of Counties 1 Southern South, Frome knew they would have a touch encounter ahead of them.

Frome started strongly and attacked deep into Swans half right from the kick-off.

The first scrum set the tone, with the home side dominating and with the Swans pack unable to cope, Frome were awarded a penalty. Taking a quick tap penalty and going through a string of phases, the backline released centre Cory Plumridge to bulldoze his way over for an early try, the conversion being added by full-back, Max Stickley.
