POLICE have caught more than 700 people speeding in Frome over the past six months.
Between May and October this year the police community safety camera has clocked up 749 detections in six locations throughout the town.
Police introduced the community safety camera in May after residents in the area identified speeding as one of their priority issues.
The introduction of the safety camera marks the culmination of work by the police, Community Speed Watch volunteers and the council to identify suitable sites and, in one case, create a hard standing area so that the camera could be sited there.
Sgt Sarah Dinnis said, “These figures show the importance of the work that has been undertaken to date by all the parties involved. We are determined to tackle speeding in our town. We want people to feel safe and to be safe when travelling in and around Frome.
“The safety camera has been introduced alongside existing stop checks by traffic officers and speed checks by local Community Speed Watch volunteers. I believe this activity, as well as awareness-raising at events and on dedicated days of action, will help reduce speeding in the area.
“I would urge motorists to ensure they always drive responsibly and within the marked speed limits to ensure their own safety and the safety of other road users.”
