PUPILS from Hayesdown First School recently took a sneak peek at life in a doctors’ surgery on a visit to Frome Medical Centre.
Clare Kennedy, nurture group leader at the school said, “At a young age some children are reluctant about visiting the doctor. The idea of this visit was to dispense with some of those fears and misapprehensions.
“The visit also presented an excellent opportunity for the children to learn more about looking after their own health generally.”
The visit to the surgery was arranged with lead practice nurse, Elaine Keene.
Elaine said, “It was an absolute joy having the children from Hayesdown visit us. Before they arrived we found out what sort of topics they wanted to talk about, from how to get rid of spots, why our heart beats, what it’s like being a nurse to how to mend cuts.
“The children had their weight and height taken, and also had the opportunity to have their blood pressure taken and use the stethoscope.
“Hopefully, at least this group of children in the future will be far less reluctant to visit the doctor!”
Clare Kennedy added, “We’d like to give a special thank you to Elaine and healthcare assistant Sarah Seviour, together with everyone else at the practice. The children had a wonderful time, learned so much and had lots of fun.”
