It’s time dust off your boob tube and moonwalk back in time as a special 1980s charity disco is coming to The Silk Mill in Frome, on Friday 8th March.
The event will kick off with the infamous Cheryl Sprinkler from Mojo Moves, limbering everyone up for a night of grooving with an 80s aerobics workout. Then Frome-based DJ Chris Salmon – better known for his packed-out Baggy Mondays slots at Glastonbury Festival – will be spinning the biggest and best 80s hits until late.
There will also be prizes for the best 80s-themed outfit, a raffle, a surprise performance, plus a cash bar, mulled cider and hot soup.
Frome resident Lainey Sweeney is hosting the one-off event, as a fundraiser for ChallengeAid, a UK-based charity established in 2005 to help children living in some of Africa’s worst slums by creating “Schools of Hope,” a unique and sustainable concept which gives educational support.
Lainey said,“If there’s two things that Frome is good at, it’s caring and partying – which is how I came up with the idea of a disco to raise funds for this vital cause. The response has been incredible; we’ve already sold more than half of the tickets and I’ve been hearing about some amazing costume ideas. To borrow a line from an 80s classic, I’m so excited, and I just can’t hide it!”
ChallengeAid promotes health and fitness throughout the UK, motivating people to raise money through exercise and is involving local schoolchildren to get active and fundraise. Beckington School is proposing that children do a sponsored walk, walking a mile a day for a week, which is how far the Schools of Hope children travel to collect fresh water. They have chosen Africa as their term topic: learning, keeping fit and fundraising all at the same time! Local power walking group, Mamadoo are also getting involved, aiming to raise enough to create a School of Hope by a series of challenges. So far they have power walked over 41km.
Tickets for the disco cost £15 per person, with all proceeds going directly to the Schools of Hope. Song requests/personal dedications can be booked in advance and DJ Chris will dedicate to your loved one on the night.
