Free workshops on how to mend your clothes will be running on the last Saturday of the month until the end of February, hosted by Everyone Needs Pockets.
The first workshop will run this Saturday, 27th September, at Frome Town Hall from 10.30am to 3.30pm. It forms part of Sustainable Fashion Week’s national focus to ‘Reclaim Fashion’, which culminates in a Flax and Nettle Day on Sunday, 5th October, hosted by the community flax project Sewing the Seeds Frome.
“You can learn how to mend your clothes, you learn on the job and get skills that will last a lifetime,” said Jill Philips, who organises the mending sessions that have supported more than 200 pieces of clothing to be fixed so far in Frome.
One of the core organisers of the Frome Hub events for this year’s Sustainable Fashion Week, Claire Orpin, said, “There’s also insect embroidery, visible mending, a children’s scrap studio and upcycling workshops. They are affordable to all with a sliding scale of pricing, with most welcoming children accompanied by parents.”
“All of these bookable workshops are part of a free and open event at Frome Town Hall this Saturday, with rope making out of scrap fabric, weaving on a giant loom, a book and haberdashery sale, plus a clothes swap in the evening with Frome Wardrobe Collective.”
The next workshop, after this Saturday, will be on Saturday 25th October, upstairs at the Cheese and Grain. Jill said, “Get those holes in your jumper mended this winter – it’s immensely satisfying to bring those unused bits of clothing back to life. The sessions always get lovely feedback, and you gain new skills too.”
