OWNERS of a pub in Frome have uncovered a well believed to be hundreds of years old inside the building.
Richard Findlay, at The Old Bath Arms on Palmer Street, discovered the well while renovating the building. It was beneath the floor in what is believed to be the original kitchen area of the pub.
Richard thinks the well could date back to before 1743 and he does not know how deep it goes, but plans to make it a feature of the pub.
He told Frome Times, “This amazing discovery will be a focal point in the renovations and we hope to use it to raise money for charity, starting with the contributions to a fund for Jamie Mines.
“We think the well was part of the original kitchen area when the pub was first built and would have been used for fresh water. Water can be seen about 20 feet down, but we don’t know how deep it really is.”
The well will be restored and made into a feature in the Old Bath Arms’s new bar and restaurant which will serve gourmet food and has plans to start a supper club.
