Saturday 12th August – Evo-Stik Southern Premier League Basingstoke 1 – Frome Town 3

FROME Town’s new season got off to a cracking start with an away win against Basingstoke.

After being two goals up after 21 minutes with goals from Marcus Mapstone and Jake Jackson, Frome survived a spirited Basingstoke attacking phase and then a superb individual goal from man of the match Jon Davies on the hour, which gave them a 3-1 victory after Basingstoke pulled one back from the spot.

Frome started well and after winning several corners and having several shots blocked, they  took the lead in the 8th minute as Mapstone dived low to head home a pin-point Davies corner which had been won by a deflected Davies shot.

Frome went close to doubling their lead a few minutes later as a defence splitting crossfield ball from Davies allowed Darren Jefferies a run and shot, but the ball cleared the far post, and despite Basingstoke starting to come into the match, Frome always looked dangerous and Davies brought an excellent save from Colm McAdden.

The second goal arrived in the 21st as Davies took two defenders out of the game and Jackson was on hand to tap in at the far post, but the home side now started to get going and it was the Frome defence that was now to play its part.

After Kyle Phillips had put a clearance into the bedroom window of a neighbouring house, Davies again brought a good save from McAdden, but on the whole it was Basingstoke who were now in the driving seat and Phillips did well to deal with a 25 yard shot and the home side had three corners in quick succession as the pressure grew.

However, Frome held their 2-0 lead until half time, but 5 minutes after the re-start, Basingstoke brought the score back to 2-1 as Ben Wright scored from the penalty spot after Mapstone had fouled in the area but only received a yellow card.

The goal inspired Basingstoke and they pressed forward increasingly, and Frome had a lucky escape as  close range header just skimmed the Frome bar and after a 6 yard shot had gone the same way, it was increasingly looking like an equaliser was on the cards.

Phillips went down well to save a close range shot, and a few minutes later a last ditch saving tackle from Mapstone saved the day, but then seconds afterwards, Davies took the pressure off as he went on a mazy run that took him past four challenges and a cool finish made it 3-1 to Frome and the win beckoned.

Basingstoke never gave up though,  Frome were being pinned in their own half for long periods, but they always looked dangerous on the counter attack with Joe Raynes and Jackson going close, but at the other end, Phillips produced a great, late save to tip over a powerful shot from the edge of the box and seal the victory.

Jon Davies was awarded the H&B Tyres Man of the Match award for a very impressive display, running the show in the first half, creating the goals and scoring a superb individual goal when it mattered.

  • Local fundraiser completes overnight marathon challenge

A local fundraiser has taken on an unusual overnight challenge, completing the London Marathon route in reverse while dressed as an elephant.

Radek Evans took part in the informal event the night before the London Marathon, starting at midnight at Buckingham Palace and finishing at the official start line in Greenwich at around 9am.

The Reverse London Marathon is an unofficial event where participants run or walk the course backwards for fun ahead of race day.

Radek, a Frome Times deliverer, took on the challenge to raise funds for community support charity Fair Frome.

“The run was a bit different,” said Radek. “It started at Buckingham Palace, normally the finish, and finished at Greenwich. I started at midnight and finished at 9am, as I was walking it while looking after my friend who was injured after tripping over.”

  • Frome Town make history with league and cup double

Frome Town Football Club have made history by securing the first league and cup double in the club’s history, completing a remarkable season for the Robins.

The team won the Southern League Division One South title before lifting the Somerset Premier Cup, capping a record-breaking campaign that also saw a 31-match unbeaten run in all competitions.

The achievement follows a summer of uncertainty for the club, with manager Danny Greaves rebuilding the squad after relegation. The side went on to lose just four league games all season and only once after October, amassing more than 100 points and winning 14 consecutive home matches.

Manager Danny Greaves praised his players and staff, saying, “I want to thank every player who has pulled on the Frome shirt this season. Their commitment, resilience, and winning mentality have been second to none, and they have earned their rewards.

  • Visually impaired runner completes London Marathon

A man from Frome who is severely visually impaired has completed the London Marathon for charity Somerset Sight.

Marly, who attends Somerset Sight’s Frome group, completed the 26.2-mile course on Sunday 26th April with his nephew Billy as a guide runner in six hours, 31 minutes and five seconds.

He has raised funds for Somerset Sight, which provides services, training and leisure activities to help people maintain independence and improve quality of life for those affected by sight loss.

Marly, who was selected to run through the ballot process, said the experience was ‘emotional’ and ‘brilliant’ as he completed the challenge alongside his nephew.

“I am certified as severely visually impaired. My peripheral vision is OK but my central vision is not there,” said Marly.

  • Frome business shortlisted for community impact award

A distillery in Frome has been shortlisted for an award recognising the impact the business has had on the community.

Still Sisters, founded by sisters Tori Jordan and Hannah Smith, is one of eight finalists for the ‘Heart of Gold’ award at this year’s Small Awards.

The business creates premium spirits and experiences while using its platform to champion safer nights out and support the local community.

Tori Jordan, co-founder of Still Sisters, said, “As a family-run business, community has always been at the heart of what we do, from creating safe, welcoming spaces in our venues to working closely with local partners to support a safer night-time economy, which aligns with our WalkSafe app project with Frome Town Council.

“To be recognised for that work is incredibly special. It’s a reminder that small businesses can make a real difference.”

  • Cherry trees thrive after crowdfunding effort

A pair of kanzan cherry trees are blossoming in Victoria Park after being planted to replace trees vandalised in the town last summer.

The original trees were planted by the town council’s ranger team with pupils from Selwood Academy but were cut down overnight in June.

Residents Nick East and Rob Hearn responded by launching a crowdfunding appeal to fund replacements, with the JustGiving page reaching its £420 target within hours of going live.

Suppliers Barcham Trees offered a discount on the replacement saplings, which were planted in the autumn and are now in blossom. The funds also contributed towards a replacement handkerchief tree near the bandstand.

  • Plant sale returns this month

Get ready with your hessian bags and boxes, as the Frome Selwood Horticultural Society, along with Frome in Bloom, will host their annual plant sale on Saturday 23rd May.

  • Somerset Council to spend £1,500 per car park to review parking charges

By Local Democracy Reporter Daniel Mumby

It will cost Somerset Council nearly £1,500 per car park to review whether new parking charges should be introduced across the county.

The council’s executive committee agreed in March to begin a root-and-branch review of parking charges, which could see a new tiered pricing structure introduced for both on and off-street parking.

A total of £272,824 has been allocated from the council’s parking reserve to pay external consultants to gather evidence on car park usage and inform future proposals, which are expected to come before councillors in the autumn.

Councillor Diogo Rodrigues, who leads the opposition Conservative group, questioned whether the level of spending could be justified given other consultancy costs linked to the council’s transformation programme and changes to the Celebration Mile in Bridgwater.

He raised the issue at a recent meeting of the executive committee. He said, “We know the council is spending up to £20m on consultants to advise on how to save money, more £200,000 on consultants to advise on how much to charge residents to park their cars, and further sums on consultants to advise on road layout changes in Bridgwater.
