Who wins? Frome decides! Last chance to get your grant application in!

This year, Frome Town Council has introduced a one-off grant payment of up to £10,000 for a local community group. The decision on how this money is spent and who will be the successful recipient of the funding will be decided by people who live in Frome. Frome Town Council welcomes applications for projects which cover or are working towards helping Frome to become a sustainable, vibrant and participatory community. Chairman of the external affairs committee, cllr Peter Macfadyen said, “The People’s, or Participatory grant represents a great opportunity for any community group in Frome to deliver a key project to benefit the town. “The closing date for the participatory grant is Tuesday 1st May, which is fast approaching. So if you have a project that you think is worth the support of the residents of Frome, then don’t miss the deadline and get your application in as soon as possible. “This year the new requirement is for the grant applicants to persuade the people of Frome to support their application. We want to put more power in the hands of the people – this is a trial, let’s see how it works!” A summary of all the participatory grant applications received will be circulated in the town council’s newsletter in June, together with a returnable voting slip so residents can choose which project they consider to be the most worthy cause. How the chosen groups gain support will be up to them! Please note that funding is still available for smaller grants up to £5,000 and applications are still ongoing. For application forms and more information on the grants available, please call 01373 465757 or e-mail admin@ frome-tc.gov.uk. You can also visit the website www.frome-tc.gov.uk and click on the Your Council section.

  • New scheme launched to secure future of Community Fridge

A scheme to keep the much-loved Community Fridge running for years to come has launched, with local people encouraged to take part.

The Community Fridge has started a ‘Friends of the Fridge’ scheme, where local people can sign up to contribute between £5 and £50 a month, helping to cover the everyday costs of keeping the fridge project running.

This includes essential equipment like cleaning supplies, staffing, food labels, upkeep and repairs and more.

  • Help shape Frome Town Council’s budget priorities

Residents are being asked to help decide what matters most when it comes to spending the money they contribute through council tax.

For the average household, council tax paid to Frome Town Council equates to around £4.72 a week, with 76% of households in council tax Bands A to C. As town councillors begin thinking about next year’s budget, they want to hear from local people about how that money should be spent and what priorities matter most to them.

Through the My Frome engagement platform, residents can take part in an interactive budgeting exercise and a short survey, helping councillors understand how people would balance spending across different areas of the council’s work and whether they feel it represents good value for money.

  • Mayor’s column

You will have noticed by now that I spend much of my time in this column celebrating our youth and their plans for the future.

I will do this throughout my year as mayor but will also reflect on memories of the town and how it has changed over the years. As someone whose family came to Frome in the early 1960s, I have seen much of this for myself but the town’s corporate memory is mostly held by Frome Museum.

Recently, I was pleased to attend the launch of a celebration marking 60 years of the museum. Exhibitions show the way it has developed in this time, from rooms in Church Steps to its impressive current home in North Parade. This building was originally the site of the Frome Literary and Scientific Institution. Originally this would have been a resource for the working people of Frome to improve their education and to socialise, but by the time I discovered it in the late 1970s it was somewhere only to play snooker!

The listing was confirmed in late August, before the owner requested a review of the decision.

  • Somerset Council pledges greater transparency over asset sales

By Local Democracy Reporter Daniel Mumby

Somerset Council has pledged to be more transparent with the public over future sales of land, property and other public assets.

  • Talk on Frome’s role in early geology

Residents will learn how the local area shaped the foundations of modern geology during an upcoming talk this month at the Frome Society.

Alan Butcher, a visiting professor at the Open University, will speak on Saturday 31st October about two local people who were the first geologists in the early 1800s.

Organiser John Peverley said, “In the early 1800’s, when the origin of planet earth was being hotly debated, two people, living near Frome, independently came up with ideas for the systematic study of rocks and fossils. One of them, William Smith, the author of the first geological map of England and Wales, was based near Midford, the other, Etheldred Bennet, lived near Warminster. They both used the natural landscape, the occurrence of natural spring lines, rocks turned up by the plough, excavations for canals, quarrying and underground exposures in coal mines, to unravel the fascinating history of rocks that became known as Geology. They were the first ‘geologists’.
