FROME Town have strengthened their squad as they look push for promotion.

The Robins have signed tough tackling centre back Mike Baker from Larkhall Athletic and former Manchester United academy graduate Callum Evans following his departure from Bath City.

Mike made his debut against Winchester City and put in an impressive performance at the heart of the defence in a 0-0 draw. And he helped his new side secure a second clean sheet against Bideford in a 2-0 win.

Mike joins from Larkhall following their fantastic run in the FA Trophy that saw them travel up to Stockport with him leading the side out as Captain. He comes in after four seasons at Larkhall, after being at Bristol Rovers Academy during his development years.

Manager Danny Greaves commented, “I am delighted to get Mike Baker through the door. He has been on our radar for a while. He has captained a Larkhall side who have always been competitive in this league for a number of years, and has been one of the best central defenders in the league for the past couple of seasons.

“He is a big strong lad, who can also play a bit which is important to us. He will add vital experience and leadership to our group for the second half of the season.

“It was clear during my conversation with him this week that he is coming to us for all of the right reasons, and is very hungry to help us deliver on our objectives for the season.”

Mike commented, “I’ve had other clubs come in for me, but not enough to temp me to leave Larkhall. Frome is a club that I believe is going places, I want to win a promotion and hopefully play in the league above next year. The lads have been very welcoming and have already made me feel comfortable, I know a few from playing with them before.”

Callum Evans has joined the Robins following his departure from Bath City. The pacey full back is graduate of  Manchester United’s academy, where he signed with Barnsley making his debut in senior football in January 2017. Callum later joined Macclesfield Town, Forest Green Rovers and Torquay United.

Callum rejoined Macclesfield Town on loan helping the club to win promotion into the English Football League as champions of the National League, before moving on to Port Vale and finally Bath City in August 2020.

Danny Greaves commented, “I am delighted to welcome Callum Evans to the club for the remainder of the season, and hopefully beyond. Callum has all the ability to play at a much higher level, and we are lucky this move suits both parties at this stage for us to make this work.

“He is a versatile player who can play in a number positions. He is technically very good as you would expect given his background, and will add real quality and experience to the group. It will take us a couple more weeks and games to get Callum up to speed, and we will have to be patient with him, but once we do, we have a real player on our hands.”

Callum commented, ““I came to watch the last game against Cirencester, the fans were brilliant, the atmosphere in the ground was great… I’m here to help the club move up the leagues.”

What is community engagement and what does it mean for you?

We talk a lot about community engagement but knowing it’s the way to help a town get involved in its own future is very different from actually doing it.

At Frome Town Council, we actively seek engagement with as many residents as we can, because we want you to feel empowered to make the changes and improvements you think would help the town become a better place to live.

We’ve recently added a new way for you to share your thoughts with us: our My Frome platform has information about forthcoming projects and plans, with opportunities to comment and participate in decision making. That doesn’t replace all the other ways you can get in touch; you’ll still see us ‘popping up’ around the town, and you can call, email or visit us at the town hall during office hours, or attend a council meeting in person or via Zoom.

  • Frome Wild Bunch Column - Feed seasonally and feed safely

Hello, this is Jenny from the Wild Bunch.

On 3rd May, it was International Dawn Chorus Day and it’s the best time of year to tune into garden birds singing their hearts out. All you have to do to enjoy it is open your window or go outside and listen. Migrant birds like swallows and swifts are returning to our town; local birds are feeding their young and new life is everywhere. Sadly, some of our birds are not thriving because of disease, greenfinches and bullfinches are experiencing serious decline. The good news is that we can help reduce the spread of disease by making a few simple changes to the way we feed the birds.

  • Frome Hoedown volunteers clean up Portway pavement

The pavement along Portway has been refreshed by residents who cleaned and repainted the railings.

The work was carried out by the Frome Hoedown team, who spent 2.5 hours transforming the area on a sunny Sunday. The railings now have gold roundels and the foliage has been removed.

Organisers said, “Many thanks to Jim, Julian, Judith, Howard, Tony, Marian, Herbie, Ali and Shane, who transformed the walkway at a cost of five small tins of gold metal paint, sugar soap and five paint brushes, just under £25.”

Shane Collins, a Somerset councillor for Frome who runs the group, said, “As central government funding for councils is reduced and the cost of children’s and adult social care goes up there is less to be spent on taking care of our streets. We can either complain or get active with our neighbours and friends and do it ourselves. As the climate heats and more land becomes inarable, food will increase in price and we will need to rely on our locality and each other much more in the future.”

  • Puppini Sisters to mark 20 years with Cheese & Grain show

The Puppini Sisters will celebrate their 20th anniversary with a special performance at the Cheese & Grain in Frome on Saturday, 23rd May.

Known for their ‘close harmonies, corsets and clever covers’, the trio were formed by Bologna-born Marcella Puppini at London’s Trinity College of Music. They made their breakthrough with debut album Betcha Bottom Dollar in 2006, which became the fastest-selling jazz debut in UK chart history.

“From festival stages to royal soirées, they have dazzled the world with their retro-glam style and genre-bending swing,” said Rob Dahl from the Cheese & Grain. “The world’s leading queens of vocal harmony, their sassy swing take on everything from Boogie Woogie Bugle Boy to Heart of Glass won over fans from Michael Bublé to King Charles.

“Their signature style, part Vivienne Westwood, part burlesque, helped spark the vintage revival.’

“Corsets were essential,” said Marcella. “We could see vintage booming, but even I didn’t expect it to get this big.”
