A BECKINGTON man’s podcast, originally recorded for his family, is charting at 35 on Apple’s documentary podcast list after achieving nearly 800 downloads so far.
‘Don’t shoot my driver!’ is a series of 19 not too serious true tales of a TV news producer/reporter’s worldwide travels in the days before mobile ‘phones, the internet, and satellite navigation aids.
“Funny, shocking, clever, and wonderfully understated,” was an early unsolicited response.
The entertaining stories take us through revolutions in Iran and Romania, the Lebanese Civil Wars, assignments in Afghanistan under Russian occupation, troubles in China after the Tiananmen Square massacre, Northern Ireland, the Iran/Iraq war, travels with the Royal Family and more.
Vernon Mann wrote them during lockdown after years of urging from his family. He spent years travelling the world for ITN before running a crisis media response company which involved more international travel to countries like Equatorial Guinea, Nigeria and Gabon.
“It’s great to be settled in Somerset now,” says Vernon.
He and his wife do spend a fair amount of time in Gozo, Malta though where ‘Don’t Shoot My Driver!’ Is ranked No 1 in Apple’s chart.
