A Really Truly generous night at the theatre

FROME’S Really Truly Theatre Company, who had sellout performances of their comedy drama Lockdown Blues recently, are presenting Polly Lamb’s second play Celebrate Me, at the Merlin Theatre on 8th June and the Rondo Theatre in Bath on 9th June.

Polly wrote Lockdown Blues as a response to the difficulties faced by women at the height the pandemic. Her new play is also a funny, life-affirming and moving look at the lives of another six women, this time with a focus on family relationships and all that comes with them, including caring for someone who isn’t always the easiest of people to have around.

Members of three local charities will have the chance to enjoy a night at the Merlin Theatre to watch the play, along with their volunteer mentors, thanks to four generous local businesses. The groups are Active and In-Touch, Fair Frome and the Frome Carers’ Group which all support people in the town and surrounding villages in various ways, including helping people to feel more connected through mentoring by volunteers and providing access to social activities with support.

Cooper and Tanner Estate Agents, Harris and Harris Solicitors, Bluebird Care Company and Gavin Eddy of The Old Church School are the kind-hearted sponsors of this scheme and have all donated tickets.

A member of the company and cast, and also a volunteer with Active and In-Touch, Suzy Howlett, said, “This is such a lovely opportunity to help more people in the town to engage with fun activities, and we are very grateful to the generous spirit of these local firms. Frome is a warm-hearted community and there is much excitement among the ticket holders, who are so looking forward to their trip.”

The play is set in the present day and in the 1940s. It centres around Barbara who is turning 92 and delighted that her birthday preparations are in full swing. The music will be vintage, the buffet won’t be beige, and the guest list is nearly complete. Dutiful Laura is buckling under the burden while her sister, Michelle, sips herbal tea and aligns her chakras. But behind the party balloons and banners, Barbara and her granddaughter, Sophie, are planning an alternative celebration which could shake up the relationships of six women for good. Visitors to the theatre can find out where the pieces fall as they join Barbara and her family in this engaging, funny and moving new comedy drama.

Really Truly Theatre Company has been attracting the praise of critics. Gaye Pirie Weir, of the Fine Times Recorder, said, “Touches of Alan Bennett in the skill of its writing. An exceptional treat” while John Christopher Wood of The Bath Echo said, “…they all vividly, wittily, poignantly, angrily, tearfully, bring the audience a fascinating glimpse of their individual worlds…never less than riveting insights brought to extraordinary life by six gifted actors. Magic.”

“Rehearsals are in full flow and tickets are selling very fast, so don’t leave it too late,” said Suzy.

  • Explore local and social history with new courses

A tutor for Frome Community Education is running a series of local and social history courses and sessions this autumn.

David Lassman has run a local history course for Frome Community Education since 2012, but has now created additional courses based on subjects he has researched for his own interest.

David said, “The course on the town’s history has become very popular over the years and has now established itself as a major part of the heritage landscape. Over the years, many of those who have participated in the course have gone on to secure key positions within Frome’s thriving historical scene.

“But when I was creating my programme for Frome Community Education this term, I felt there was enough research material on other subjects that are close to my heart.”

  • Skatepark plans prompt discussion on inclusivity for girls and young women

Frome Town Council has voted to progress with building a new skatepark at Mary Baily Playing Field, following a majority vote at a recent council meeting.

However, the plans prompted a lengthy discussion among councillors and members of the public over whether they are inclusive enough for girls and young women.

At a meeting on Wednesday 27th August, councillors voted by majority to proceed with the project, which will replace the existing skatepark following a public consultation. The current facility, built 13 years ago at a cost of £34,000, is said to be ‘nearing the end of its life.’

The town council will now work with local volunteer-led group Frome Skatepark Project to develop the new skatepark, expected to cost up to £400,000. The site will be relocated closer to the children’s play park, with safety features to separate the two areas and a commitment to make the facility as accessible as possible.

  • Children’s supporters’ club to launch at Frome Town FC

A Frome Town FC Supporters’ Club for children is due to launch next month, giving local children the opportunity to be a part of the club’s community from a young age.

Frome Town Supporters’ Club Young Robbins is due to launch on 18th October for children aged 0 to 16 years old. On the day, children will be given the chance to walk out with the players as a mascot when Frome Town host Winchester City.

“Our children are the fans of the future,” said one of the organisers, Wayne. “It’s all about getting children out in the fresh air to make friends and support their local side, instead of only watching football on the television.”

The Young Robbins club will cost £5 a season per child and will include a mini pack, key ring, stickers, a chance to be a mascot at the games and walk out with the players and a birthday card signed by the squad.

  • Frome Cheese Show returns with stunts, livestock and award-winning cheese

The Frome Agricultural and Cheese Show returned on Saturday 13th September, bringing thousands of visitors together for a day of celebrating the very best of food, farming, and, of course, cheese.

The day began with sunny weather, and the showground buzzed with energy from start to finish.

Despite rain in the latter part of the afternoon, visitors, traders and competitors remained in high spirits, showing their full support for the show.

At the heart of the day was the Global Cheese Awards, which once again showcased the finest cheesemaking from around the world. This year’s British and Irish Supreme Champion title was awarded to First Milk Cheese Company, Haverfordwest, for their Coloured Vintage Cheddar.

  • Show-stopping Frome Carnival rolls into town

A spectacular Frome Carnival took over the town last week in one of its biggest processions yet.

The colourful event was held on Saturday 20th September and began with the Children’s Carnival in the afternoon, which saw local children, groups, schools and dance and theatre ensembles in fancy dress parade through the roads around Victoria Park.

The evening procession then brought more carnival cheer, with 54 entries, including themed floats, fancy dress and lively music, entertaining crowds which lined the street from the Marston Trading Estate to the town centre.

“We felt it went really well; it was a really good community-spirited carnival,” said one of the organisers, Mandy Morgan. “Everybody on the route was clapping and left in good spirits. There is so much doom and gloom in the world; we all need a lift, and all of our entries were absolutely amazing."
