Famous for being the home of one of the world’s largest music festivals and the site of the ancient and mysterious Isle of Avalon, the town of Glastonbury also hosts the Glastonbury 10K race once a year.
On Sunday 30th April, two Frome runners lined up for the race. Jim Coles (M45) completed the course in 00:55:42, followed by Iain Brownlie (M45) in 00:59:14.
The next day, Frome runner Graham Farley chose to celebrate the May Day bank holiday by racing across Salisbury Plain and along the Wyle Valley in the Sutton Veny 10K race, completing the course in 00:57:16.
The following Saturday, a large contingent of Frome runners took on the Marlborough Downs Challenge 20 and 33. These beautiful yet demanding 20- and 33-mile trail runs follow the tracks and footpaths of the chalk hills in the heart of Wiltshire.
In the 20-mile challenge, Giles Padfield (M40) was the first Fromie to cross the line in 02:47:47, followed by Steve Carroll (M50) in 03:28:28 and Fleur Rush (F40) in 03:44:52. Lynn Brand (F50), Fiona Norris (F50) and Sara Elliott (F50) all crossed the line at the same time in 04:05:42. Sarah Perrett and Dave Perrett (M40) also finished together in 04:06:52, followed by Roger Devereux (M50) in 04:18:27 and Emma Flexon (F40) in 04:19:19. Richard Corp (M40) took part in the 33-mile race, crossing the line in 05:55:14.
Also on Saturday 6th May was the Semington Slog. Lee Stone (MV40) put in a sterling performance, completing the course in 00:38:07 to secure second position overall and first in category. Jude O’Connor (MV40) crossed the line in 1:03:52.0.
The next day, Sunday 7th May, saw the Trowbridge 5K Colorific run start from Trowbridge Park, wending its way through the roads, footpaths and cycleways of the town.
Katherine Uphill (FESN) was the first Frome Club runner and the first woman overall to finish in 00:18:40. She was followed by Shane Ford (MSEN) in 00:19:56, Peter Reed (MV40) in 00:23:24 and Emma Evans (FV40) in 00:24:46. Junior runner Mary Evans (FJUN1) completed the course in 00:37:58.
Three more Fromies were racing over in Bristol on 7th May in the Bristol 10k. Lee Stone completed the distance in a time of 00:38:29. Chris Chivers crossed the line in 00:54:34 and Rose Hiron Grimes in 01:13:17. Somewhat further afield, Graham Farley took to the roads of Scunthorpe to participate in North Lincs Half Marathon, completing the course in 01:58:42.
