THE speaker for the September meeting of the Frome Family History Group, Tony Painter, had to withdraw at the last minute as he had Covid. The talk on the myths and legends from the Godfrey maps will be arranged for another time.
The committee stepped into the breach and shared two presentations, one from Sue Latham and one from Gerry Burdall.
Local historian, Sue, showed several old photographs of Frome with the kind permission of Frome Museum. The audience joined in with a lively discussion on the whereabouts, date and possible event of each photo. To look at old photos of Frome go to the Frome Museum catalogue, select what you would like to see and put the word photograph in the object category. It is work in progress so not every image will be available yet.
The next speaker was Gerry who shared about his varied and interesting career in printing ink and his rapid promotion whilst working for The Weston Ink Company which meant that he worked for Robert Maxwell for a short time. Many humorous anecdotes were told and enjoyed by the audience and Gerry was thanked for giving us such a fascinating insight into his long career.
The next event will be on Tuesday 25th October and is a talk by Jim Clipson entitled From Somerset to Sulva; The search for four Frome men from the First World War.
