FROME Town FC Robins have raised £535 for local charity SOS Africa by abseiling down the 100ft tower of St Mary’s Church.
The group of representatives from the football club, made up of mums, coaches and 13-year-old Sam Fordham who plays for the U14s team, took part in the event in aid of SOS Africa, with 130 other brave abseilers made up of local businesses, schools and community groups.
Sam said, “I enjoyed my experience, it was fun. I was very excited for the event and the event organisers were very helpful during the abseil. I enjoyed being part of team Robins and I would definitely do it again.”
Through SOS Africa, the Robins sponsor a child in Africa and the money raised will go towards sending this child to school. As part of the sponsorship, the SOS Africa logo has been printed on this season’s football shirts.
Event organiser and SOS Africa charity founder, Matt Crowcombe said, “The current fundraising total stands at £7,000 with more sponsorship still to be collected – this already equates to 30 years of school tuition for the underprivileged children we support in South Africa.
“Congratulations to all 130 abseilers for completing our St Mary’s Abseil challenge! A big thank you to our brilliant instructors from Aardvark Endeavours, church warden, Harry Mills, for his support throughout, our volunteers and the fantastic crowds which gathered to support our abseilers throughout the weekend.”
