Absolutely Fabulous back in business after building scare

LOCAL costume hire and fancy dress shop, Absolutely Fabulous Costume Hire, has re-opened its doors after a roller-coaster of a second lock down.

During the national lock down in November owner, Philippa Kaye, was shocked to be told that a structural engineer had deemed the Grade II listed building on Bath Street, that is home to her business, as unsafe and at ‘risk of collapse’.

However, after a worrying few days when Philippa faced the prospect of having to close her business beyond the national lock down, she was relieved to be told that there was no risk of collapse and that she could re-open once restrictions were lifted.

“It’s a relief that the building is not falling down!” said Philippa talking to Frome Times. “The oak lintel at the shop front isn’t as bad as the structural engineer led us to believe. The beam has been patched up but, as the building is Grade II listed, conservation officers need to look at it before they decide how the work is to be finished.”

With its doors now re-opened, AbFab is appealing to the community to ‘think local’ this Christmas for all its festive costume and party needs.

“We are facing a difficult time,” said Philippa. “At Halloween we took less than 10% of what we would normally take in that month, which is pretty horrendous, and that is one of our busiest months. It helps supports us for the quiet months ahead, as does Christmas and New Year.

“This festive period, families and friends may not be able to see each other, no-one can party, there are no theatres open, no pantos, – so it is going to be a difficult time for everyone, but especially for traders in the party business, and many others too.

“So if you are planning a fancy dress party at home in your ‘bubble’, if you need hats for Christmas dinner, a Santa costume, or some fun stocking fillers, don’t go online, think local – come to us!

“And if you can’t make our restricted hours you can call for an out-of-hours appointment to suit.”

  • Health information events at Frome Medical Practice

Two health information events are being held at Frome Medical Practice this month, aimed at supporting patients on key health topics.

The first event, a Pelvic Health Talk, is offered as part of the Women’s Health Hub at the practice and takes place on Tuesday 23rd June from 6pm to 7pm.

Organisers say, “Many women experience symptoms of poor pelvic health in silence but it doesn’t have to be that way. Patients are invited to come to the talk to learn more about common pelvic health issues, as well as ways to improve symptoms and support wellbeing. The session will be led by a pelvic health physiotherapist and aims to empower women to take control of their health.”

  • Friends cycle to Rome in once-in-a-lifetime charity adventure

A 1,300-mile journey from Frome to Rome is under way after two friends turned a casual pub idea into a six-week cycling challenge across three countries.

Frome resident Anton Grais set off with friend Joel Rooprai on 17th May and the duo will cycle for six weeks across three countries, crossing rural landscapes, busy cities and challenging mountain routes in the Alps.

They are aiming to raise £1,500, which will be split between Mind, the British Heart Foundation and the Royal British Legion.

The idea came following a ‘tipsy’ trip to the pub last year. They left their jobs – Anton worked in property and Joel in aerospace defence – to undertake the adventure.

  • Community investment tops £250,000 in Saxonvale share offer

More than a quarter of a million pounds has been raised through the Mayday Saxonvale Community Share Offer less than a week after it opened to the public.

Over 260 people have now invested over £256,000 in the campaign to bring Saxonvale, a 12-acre regeneration site in the centre of Frome, into community ownership.

The investment cam-paign allows people to buy community shares in Mayday Saxonvale Community Benefit Society to help fund a bid to purchase and regenerate the town centre site. The group says that if successful, Saxonvale would become one of the UK’s largest and most ambitious community-led regeneration projects.

The campaign is aiming to raise a minimum of £1.5 million from the community alongside £1.2 million of secured social impact lending from Resonance, creating a minimum £2.7 million funding package to support a bid for the site.

The council is now seeking an enthusiastic and organised individual to lead the day-to-day operation of the markets and help drive their future success.

The Market Coordinator will oversee market operations, trader support, health and safety, improve customer experience and develop the marketing of them. The role will also play a key part in attracting new traders, increasing footfall and ensuring the markets continue to evolve and thrive.
