Clarrie Dunbar’s Andrew Colebrooke came through a field of 64 top players to win the Westlecot Open Singles over the weekend of 13th & 14th December.
En route to the final Andrew overcame, Welford on Avon’s Simon Davies in 2 straight sets (8-5 & 9-5), in the first round to put up against 2014 PlanetBowls Grand Prix Champion Shaun Jones from Malvern Hills in the second round.
Andrew then pulled off an impressive 6-6 and 7-3 victory over Shaun to put him into the last 16 where he beat Tony Kirby from Dartford 10-1 and 6-6.
In the quarter final Andrew met fellow Clarrie club mate Andy Taylor who had earlier beaten tournament favourite Danny Denison to win the Bounty Hunter prize. Andy took Andrew to a tie-breaker, he eventually came through 10-1, 3-5 and 2-0, to setup his semi-final place with Oxford’s Sam Watts, which he won in straight sets 10-2 and 8-3.
In the final Andrew faced Bournemouth’s Ben Paulley in a match that swung one way then the other. Andrew won the first set 10-5, then lost the second 1-7, but pulled off an all-important 2-0 tie-break win to take the title and £1000 first prize.
Andrew said afterwards he was overjoyed with the win and had to play his A game throughout.
