Edventure Frome is seeking applications for its fourth ‘Make’ course, which runs part-time, Mondays to Thursdays, 9.30am to 2.30pm, from Monday 12th June to 3rd July. The course runs three times a year and is aimed at 19 to 35 year olds.
This free course is ideal for anyone who is facing challenges and keen to move towards employment, and provides opportunities to develop practical, creative, communication and business skills.
The course hours are specifically designed to make it easier for parents of school-age children to attend.
Edventure courses are very different from most college courses. Instead of being taught to make a specific item, students form a team and develop their own product ideas. Local experts teach craft, marketing, team-building and business skills through specific sessions designed to support personal, product and team development.
Teams so far have created products such as woodland-inspired felted masks, tails and wands for children, and an ethical food product – the ‘Edgy Veggie’ burger, made mainly from locally grown vegetables.
This is how some former students describe the experience:
“every single day on this course has been a new learning experience”
“I feel that I have improved a lot of my personal skills and have gained many practical ones”.
Course facilitator at Edventure, Nicola Tanner says, “When I first joined Edventure, I really did wonder whether our ‘Make’ course could make a meaningful difference for people in just three weeks. The results achieved by our students back in March were a ‘wow’ for me. This group of total strangers formed an effective and adaptable team, took on multiple challenges, held a successful event and all came out of the whole experience with the confidence to take the next steps towards greater independence and finding work. For many people, finding sustainable employment is not a ‘quick fix’, but ‘Make’ is a great step on the journey.”
This summer, ‘Make’ students will be working with craft tutor Thomas Hutchinson, co- founder of ReelWood, a local business rooted in a passion for wood and building everything from furniture to tree houses and bespoke campervans. Exactly what they will make remains to be discovered, all we know for sure is that it will involve wood in some way!
