A FROME resident is displaying artwork in an exhibition created by a group which went virtual during the pandemic.
Before lockdowns were enforced Philippa Edwards had been taking part in the Drawing Now classes – which have been run in Trowbridge by Michele Whitelock since 2014.
Philippa told Frome Times, “During the summer of 2020 creative practices became a lifeline for many – including people who had not considered themselves artistically inclined. People baked, sang, painted and gardened like they never had before.
“Drawing Now all used to meet in person, and five of us decided to continue our exploration throughout the lockdown in spring and summer of 2020, with the generous support of Michele. Myself, Alison Lambdin, Annette Smith, Chloe Lambdin and Yvonne Powell met online each week when Michele would provide a prompt to spark a new way of working.
“Some weeks would involve a change of pace, scale, materials or composition. Mostly the group would discuss what we had done and were going to do, but occasionally we would work together or visit a museum or galley online, or look into another artist’s way of working.
“Members of the group shared their work throughout the week along with any interesting findings, books, articles, podcasts etc. We were careful to support each other and not make it a burden. In this way each member of the group was able to start afresh each week, and be inspired to produce work in response to the group prompt. There was no expectation to attend or have a final outcome, and the spirit of the group was to stimulate work and create a focus.”
The idea of an exhibition was discussed and the group decided to show many of their experimental and working drawings, alongside some more finished pieces.
The show called “A Series of Beginnings” runs until July 3rd at Trowbridge Town Hall. It is open 10am to 4pm daily (closed Sundays).
