LOCAL authors, David Lassman and Mick Davis, have teamed up again to release their second book ‘Foul Deeds & Suspicious Deaths in & around Frome’ that looks at the dark history of the town.
‘Foul Deeds and Suspicious Deaths in and Around Frome’ chronicles 14 foul but fascinating stories that include the Frome vicar who wrote the most significant book on witchcraft, from The Great Beast himself, Aleister Crowley, to the perpetrators of the Salem witch trials; the key turning point in the Monmouth Rebellion; the last person to be publicly hanged outside Taunton gaol; a war veteran’s triple tragedy; and the violent and brutal pitched battle that was the culmination of a long-running feud between the local populace and the Salvation Army. You will never look at Frome the same way again.
David Lassman said, “Although our previous book ‘The Awful Killing of Sarah Watts’ was great to write, it occurred within a small time period of Frome’s illustrious history.
“With this latest book, however, we were able to delve into the town’s past from the mid-seventeenth century right up to the beginning of the twentieth, which was great fun.
“All the pieces in the book were very enjoyable to research and write, but probably one of our favourites has to be the episode in which the residents of Frome engaged in a pitched battle with the Salvation Army!”
David and Mick will be launching ‘Foul Deeds & Suspicious Deaths’ at Hunting Raven Books on Thursday 4th October. Doors from 7pm. This is a free event, but space is limited so do book early to avoid disappointment by calling 01373 473111, emailing winstonebooks3@gmail.com, or by popping into the shop at 9-10 Cheap Street.
