Players from the Frome Junior Badminton Club had cause to celebrate the end of the Mid-Wilts Junior Badminton League season for 2016-2017 by achieving the double in the Under 18 Junior League with the Frome A team winning Division 1 and Frome C Division 2.
In Division 1, Frome A were in dominant form throughout the season, and despite a defeat to rivals Devizes A in the opening round, maintained their challenge for the title with comprehensive victories against the other teams.
It was soon a two-horse race between Frome A and Devizes A, and the 2nd match between them would decide the title. It proved to be a thriller of a match with some quality badminton being played by both team as well as keeping each other in check. In the end, the match was drawn, which meant that Frome A had to rely on other match results on the final day to decide their fate.
Fortunately for Frome A, an under-strength Devizes A team on the day were no match for the likes of Corsham and Frome B, and with the comprehensive despatch of St Augustine’s A, Frome A were crowned champions.
The Frome B team – despite having the same number of points as Corsham A had to settle for 4th place on games difference.
Meanwhile in Division 2, the Frome C team recovered from an opening match defeat by the Mid-Wilts team and maintained the challenge for the top spot with some impressive hard fought wins. They kept their cool and remained consistent when the other teams started to falter and successive wins put them in a commanding position at the top.
By the final day, Frome C were already Division 2 Champions, even though Aero A pushed them all the way to earn a hard-fought draw in the final match.
In the Under 14 League, the Frome A U14 team narrowly missed out on a medal by finishing the season in 3rd place, only losing to the teams above them St Augustine’s in 2nd and Corsham in 1st). Despite this, the team put in an impressive performance with some convincing wins. Meanwhile, the Frome B U14 teams finished a respectable 7th.
Junior Club Coach Clive Davis said “Well done to all the players involved especially the U18 A and C teams for their well-deserved success. I am really impressed by the way in which everyone especially the younger ones have improved over the season which bodes well for the future.”
