Baking up a storm for charity

A SPEC-TACULAR fundraising effort by a Frome opticians helped to raise more than £300 for Lisa’s Army.

Organised by optical assistant, Heather Cook, the team at Specsavers in the Westway Centre, Frome, channelled their inner Mary Berry to bake a host of sweet and savoury treats which were snapped up by local people. Such was their popularity that everything had been sold by 2.30pm, with all the money raised going to help local woman, and Specsavers customer, Lisa Wells.

“Everyone chipped in to help make sure that we had some delicious baked goods to sell,” said store director, Richard Goring. “Along with Heather, apprentice Josie Evans and Heather’s sister Karen went above and beyond, standing outside the store in the cold and encouraging people to make a purchase.

“We’re extremely grateful for the support from our community who really got behind the cause, in some cases just simply making a donation without buying a cake. It just shows how much affection there is towards Lisa in the town, and how keen everyone is to help.”

Lisa, who set up Lisa’s Army to ensure a lasting legacy for her two young daughters, has been fundraising since being diagnosed with stage four bowel and liver cancer in October 2017. The fundraising total currently stands at just over £80,000. Dorothy House, who have helped the family from the start, will also receive 10% of the proceeds.
