BATH Cancer Unit Support Group (BCUSG), which raises funds to enhance cancer treatments at the Royal United Hospital, is forming a fund-raising branch covering Frome, Shepton Mallet and Midsomer Norton.
A small number of local individuals have met on several occasions to set up the new branch.
The whole charity is run by volunteers and thus on average, 90-95% of the funds raised are available for the charitable objects.
The charity was formed in 1985 by a group of cancer medical staff with Shepton Mallet Round Table when it was being proposed that all cancer treatments in Bath be moved to Bristol. They raised sufficient funds to purchase a linear accelerator which is used for radiotherapy treatments. That enabled cancer treatments to continue at RUH.
The new Frome branch has already been very active and has received donations from two Frome Rotary Clubs – £5,000 from Frome Town and £1,500 from Frome Selwood. A Ceilidh was held at the Corsley Fayre on 3rd September and raised over £3,000.
A public meeting for anyone who would like to find out more about the charity and the group, to come along. The meeting will be held on Tuesday 27th September at 7.00pm at the Merlin Theatre. Everyone is welcome to come.
