Sat 14th Jan. Regional 2 Tribute Severn. Winscombe RFC 29-7 Frome RFC
FROME RFC travelled to Winscombe RFC on Saturday 14th January, looking to pull away from the home side at the bottom of the table.
However, from the start, the home side put Frome under immense pressure, but desperate defence led by captain, Alex Mallon, kept Winscombe at bay.
An early penalty for Winscombe drifted wide, but from the ensuing dropout the home team built more pressure and were rewarded with a converted try.
Frome then gained a foothold in Winscombe territory, but after a kick was collected by the full back, quick hands through the backline and then down the touchline caught Frome out and the home side increased their lead to 14 points.
Frome continued to soak up pressure and looked to have turned the tide following a great defensive play by Winger Bailey Rusz, but a dropped ball allowed the home Flanker to score unopposed.
A penalty on the stroke of half time secured a 24-point lead for the home side.
HT: Winscombe RFC 24 – 0 Frome RFC.
Frome came out at half time looking to improve on their first half performance and despite having more of the ball in the second half, they still found it difficult to progress against a resolute defence.
Frome were finally rewarded with points and scored from a line out through Flanker Sam Bartlett, who crashed over for the try, the conversion added by full back Henry Bull.
Winscombe then scored an unconverted try to increase their lead and were worthy winners on a disappointing day for Frome.
FT: Winscombe RFC 29 – 7 Frome RFC
Player of the Match was awarded to Second Row, Daniel Castle.
The result now sees Frome sit in 11th position of Regional 2 Severn, but with games still in hand over Winscombe, the possibility to climb away from the bottom of the table starts with a home game against Thornbury RFC this weekend.
