Tri.art Theatre School are getting ready for auditions for their Bugsy Malone Summer School, fresh from winning the runner up for Best Musical Production at the recent Somerset Fellowship of Drama Awards.
The auditions will be held on Sunday 15th May at the Merlin Theatre.
Their production of ‘West Side Story’ received a staggering 13 nominations as well as winning runner up. Amy Morgan-Bell and Claudia Pepler, co-directors of Tri.art were delighted. They said, “We are so proud of our team and cast; when you consider that the two of us are going up against some of the big guns of Somerset’s finest musical theatre companies, and as a two week summer school! To say we were gob smacked and thrilled is an understatement!”
Part of Tri.art’s ethos is to mentor and nurture new talent; so this year Amy and Claudia will be assisting their new creative team. Ryan Hughes has already cut his Directing teeth on several shows at the Merlin including ‘Chorus Line’, and ‘Little Shop of Horrors’ for the Merlin Youth Theatre. He has no concerns directing an intensive fortnight after directing a full blown musical in 24 hours last year with the fundraising production of ‘Rent’.
Sarah Wingrove, no stranger to the stage, already teaches at Tri.art Dance Academy. She has choreographed set pieces for the showcases, but this will be her first full scale production. Jack Vincent joins the team as musical director. Jack has played many times in the Merlin orchestra, and has been musical director for Make Shift Musicals and Merlin Youth Theatre.
Bugsy is set in New York, it’s loosely based on events from the early 1920s to 1931 during Prohibition, specifically the exploits of real-life gangsters like Al Capone and Bugs Moran. It features great songs such as ‘Bugsy Malone’, ‘Fat Sam’s Grand Slam’, ‘My Name Is Tallulah’ and ‘Down and Out’ and is a perfect show to do with young people.
Auditions are on Sunday 15th May at the Merlin Theatre, 12.00 midday. They will be held in an informal, fun workshop style, with everything taught on the day. The workshop is for ages eight -18 years old.
A £50 deposit will be required at the time of audition. It will be refunded if you are unsuccessful. The cost of the two weeks is £120 with a sibling discount of £100.

The workshop is 8th-20th August, with performances 18th, 19th and 20th August.
