A FROME artist’s work is being exhibited alongside a 2022 Turner Prize nominee Dr. Ingrid Pollard MBE, and Devon-based artist Monica-Shanta, at the Mirror Gallery in Plymouth.
Work from Gladys Paulus’s Hinterland series, that was first shown in the Black Swan Arts in 2017, is part of an exhibition, Ritual Touch, at the gallery, based at the Arts University Plymouth. The exhibition is being curated by Ella S. Mills and Lorna Rose and runs until Saturday 11th March.
Gladys said, “When I was first approached about this show in the summer of 2022, I wasn’t sure if I wanted to separate any pieces of my work from their larger context but Ella and Lorna’s sensitivity to my work and my relationship to it shone through in my dealings with them, and created a real sense of trust.
“Their curatorial vision and overall remit aligned beautifully with mine, so that helped persuade me too. And now that I have seen their vision realised, and all the works are together in one space, I can only say that they have done an extraordinary job. The works complement and enhance each other, somehow managing to add further layers of meaning to them.
“I am very proud to be a part of this show, and it’s a real honour for me to exhibit with both Ingrid and Monica. But if it had not been for Hans Borgonjon and the amazing team at Black Swan Arts, who first showed this work publicly back in 2017, this opportunity would never have come my way, so a big thank you to them.”
An Artist Panel will take place on Thursday 2nd March from 6pm to 7.30pm at Arts University Plymouth. This will be an evening of conversation with all the artists and curators of Ritual Touch. Drawing on the themes of the exhibition, the featured artworks will be discussed, learning more about the artists’ wider practice and exploring how the artists’ work is in dialogue with each other in the process. Tickets are free, but booking is essential via https://www.eventbrite.co.uk/e/ritual-touch-artist-panel -tickets-516479452947
