Volunteers from Frome Canoe Club spent last Saturday morning removing debris and litter from the river in the town centre.
Club secretary Pam Dixon said, “There were some surprising finds including two fairly respectable bicycles – one of which found a new owner pretty quickly – and a lovely child’s toy house. There was of course all the expected litter and other debris and just one shopping trolley this time!
“The Canoe Club joined into a regional drive by canoeists all over the south west to keep our rivers clean.”
Jack Smiles, organiser of the clean-up in Frome said, “We had a good turnout of volunteers from our club and in just two hours we completely cleared the banks of the River Frome in the town centre. It was a very rewarding task though a thoroughly messy one!
“To be able to make a difference like this is wonderful and we are very happy to contribute to the town centre in this way. Let’s hope that this may encourage people to think twice about throwing away their litter in the future.”
