The Kumon Frome Study Centre gathered at Oakfield School on Sunday 17th November, to recognise the achievements of local children of all ages from Frome and the surrounding areas.
After having fun on the bouncy castle and finding something new to read at the Book Swap, the students and their families watched as over 70 awards were presented to children who are excelling in maths and English at the Frome Kumon Study Centre, on Palmer Street.
The awards celebrate the achievements of the children who are now working above the level expected for their age and also children who have developed their study skills, such as concentration, independence and confidence.
The awards were presented by Kumon students at the centre who are studying the highest levels of programmes, ranging in age from 10-13 years. All of whom are working at least three years ahead of the level expected for the age in maths or English and are working at GCSE or A-level standard.
Included in the awards was the presentation of the Kumon G-In-Primary Award to Olaf Potoniec, who is in year 5 and has been studying with Kumon for less than two years . This is an award presented to children who reach the start of GCSE level calculation on the maths programme before the end of year 6.
Olaf’s mother, Anna, said, “It was amazing to watch Olaf receiving his G Award. We are very proud of him, his hard work and discipline. A big thank you to the Kumon staff for their support and help.”
Kaide Wong, year 9, who has been studying at the Frome centre for four years, also received a high level award for completing level J of the maths programme. This level is the start of advanced algebra, equivalent to A-level calculation.
Susan Wong, Kaide’s mother said, “We are proud of the hard work and commitment that Kaide has put towards his Kumon and appreciate the support and recognition that Kumon has given him.”
Instructor, Susan Gatward said “The high level awards are something any child can achieve, over several years, given a commitment to daily study. Excelling beyond school level is not reserved for the gifted and talented. The majority of children receiving these awards either began studying Kumon at a young age or enrolled because they had lost confidence in their maths or English.
“Our aim is to support each of them to develop the skills to begin studying ahead of the level expected for their age in around 12 months of daily study. As we enter our 14th year in Frome we have more students ahead of school level than ever before!’’
