A church in Frome is fundraising for a vital renovation to save the historic building.
Christ Church, on Christchurch Street West, was built in 1818 and is on a ‘heritage at risk’ list due to the condition of the roof, rainwater components, windows, heating and paintwork.
To re-energise the sacred space, the committee Christ Church Future was set up.
A member of the committee, Mary Gatliffe, said, “We are determined to ensure that the building is watertight, warm, accessible and welcoming. We are planning a renovation project which will address the roof, restore the windows, improve the heating (using sustainable energy sources) and ensure that the building is welcoming and accessible for all.
“Visitors, churchgoers and the wider community have said that the building is important to them, whether as a place for worship, as a great venue for musical events, as a space for quiet reflection or simply as a visible part of the cultural heritage of Frome.”
The weathered polycarbonate sheeting on some of the windows has already been removed, making the building look more open. Plans are also being drawn up for a permanent access ramp. However, to complete the rest of the work, the committee says a great deal more money will need to be raised.
Another committee member, Olivia Date, said, “The community has been great. They’ve given us so much useful feedback and turned up to our various fundraising events with generosity and open-heartedness. We thank them all.
