Clarrie Dunbar Indoor Bowls Club Shame of ‘bad bowling’ helps save lives

Clarrie Dunbar Indoor Bowls Club is proud to announce the installation of a Life Saving Defibrillator on the exterior of the club’s premises at Standerwick. 

The defibrillator at Standerwick is part of a public-access network, an initiative of The Friends of Frome Hospital.  The funding for the defibrillator was raised by donations, primarily from the Frome Rotary Club and the members of Clarrie Dunbar, who had raised £1700 which was recently presented to Peter Green of the Friends of Frome Hospital.

The money raised by the club was made by members making individual generous donations and by contributing to a ‘bad bowling scheme’.  Bowlers have been able to ‘relinquish their shame’ of bowling a ‘wrong bias’ bowl by making a 50p donation in a collection box positioned on the rinks.

The ‘shame’ contribution is increased to £1 for players representing the club in inter-club games (i.e. in Whites). One male player had made a £5 contribution, to ease his pain, after making a wrong bias mistake in a National Denny Cup match, away from home.

Thanks to The Friends of Frome Hospital, The Frome Rotary Club and people in the area making generous donations, Frome has been acknowledged as the first town in the country to develop and install a ‘community-wide network’ of public access automated external defibrillators (AED) for use in cardiac arrest situations.

The reasoning behind the initiative is that sudden cardiac arrests account for around 100,000 deaths in the UK each year of which 60,000 occur in the home, at work or when out-and-about. Having numerous public access defibrillators in the community means there will always be one nearby in the event of a life-threatening emergency.
