  • Frome Wild Bunch Column – A creature in the wrong place at the wrong time

Hello, this is Peter from the Wild Bunch.

At this time of year, I could spend 24 hours a day in the garden and still have jobs left undone. To make things harder, we’ve had one of the driest springs on record after an endlessly wet winter. These extremes are especially challenging for the small co-inhabitants of planet Earth I want to focus on here and the importance of helping them thrive.

In geological terms, it’s not long since the ancestors of life in our garden soils were also our ancestors. Much of the microscopic life in soil — especially bacteria — has changed little over millions of years. Some remained much the same, while others evolved towards humans. Remembering that connection may help us create conditions where all life can flourish.

  • Train-themed social group brings people together

Train enthusiasts of all ages gathered at the first-ever Trains Connects social group in Frome last week, and organisers say the response was far bigger than expected.

The informal meet-up at the Cheese and Grain Cafe brought together 26 people interested in everything from heritage railways and train travel to spotting, modelling and railway history.

Jenny, who started the group, said, “There was such a lovely atmosphere in the room. What struck me most was how many conversations were happening between people who had never met before. Train enthusiasm creates connection, purpose and belonging for so many people.”

The monthly socials are open to everyone, including complete newcomers.

  • Success for Frome squash players at Trowbridge club

Frome-based players have enjoyed notable success at recent tournaments held at Trowbridge Squash Rackets Club, taking top honours in both the Club Handicap and Club Championship competitions.

In February, the club hosted its popular annual Handicap tournament, which gives players of all abilities an equal chance of success through a graded scoring system. After two days of competition, Frome player Pete Hodgson claimed the title, defeating Nick Rawlings in the final.

The success continued in April with the return of the Club Championship, held for the first time since the Covid pandemic. The scratch competition saw leading players compete for the title, with Frome’s Robbie Collier, seeded second, defeating top seed Mark McGuiness in the final.

Pupils were split into groups for the challenge, with each group contributing to the total distance of 10 miles.

  • Early successes as new bowls season gets underway

Frome Park Bowls Club men’s team have had a promising start to the season with some good results.

Newly promoted Frome Park B started their campaign in the Somerset County League East Division 1 against their fellow club members of Frome Park A. It turned out to be a rude awakening for the B team as they had a heavy defeat, losing by 77 - 27 with the A team taking all 12 points. The best rink for the A team was Colin Henning, John Barber, Les Stather and Steve West.

The A team then travelled to Paulton to play Purnells B. Again Frome Park were far too strong for the hosts and ran out comfortable winners by 80 - 24 and picking up the maximum 12 points.

Frome’s best rink, winning by an impressive 33 - 7 was Colin Hinvest, Keith Haines, John Barber and Steve West.
