THE Memorial Theatre lineup is jam-packed with music and entertainment for the coming weeks.

Saturday 25th August 7.30pm. Some Guys Have All The Luck – The Rod Stewart Story. Some Guys Have All The Luck is a fantastic theatrical production celebrating the career of one of rock’s greatest icons, Rod Stewart – from street busker through to international superstar!

Paul Metcalfe delivers an authentic and charismatic performance, assuming the persona of this legendary singer-songwriter and performer right down to the last detail – from the distinctive vocals to the swaggering showmanship and sheer fun that have made Rod Stewart one of the most loved performers of all time.

The show includes all the massive hits from Rod’s incredible career, classic rockers like Maggie May, Baby Jane and Da Ya Think I’m Sexy through to big ballads such as Sailing, You’re In My Heart, and Tonight’s The Night as well as favourites from his days with The Faces such as Stay With Me and Twistin’ The Night Away and timeless Motown tunes from the album Soulbook. Tickets £21.50

Saturday 1st September 7.30pm. The Roy Orbison Story – 10 Year Anniversary with Barry Steele and Friends. He’s the man with the sunglasses and the black suit who delivered some of the world’s darkest and most emotional ballads, yet Texas-born Roy Orbison remains one of the most distinctive looking, and sounding performers in modern music, despite dying 30 years ago, leaving others to bring his music to the concert stage.

But Barry Steele, who takes on the role in The Roy Orbison Story, comes with very great credentials and a genuine admiration for the Big “O”. Now he is set to put the rock back into ‘Roy Orbison’ as he takes to the stage to commemorate this legend in The Roy Orbison Story 30 Year Special.

Expect what is being billed as an upbeat and contemporary slant on Orbison’s legacy, as Barry Steele and Friends take audiences on a musical journey from the early Sun years right through to the late 1980s, when Orbison was experiencing a huge resurgence in popularity and worked with Bono,  Bruce Springsteen and others including super group the Traveling Wilburys alongside former Beatle George Harrison, Bob Dylan, Tom Petty and Jeff Lynne.

So get ready for a night of solid gold 60s hits and 80s contemporary genius as the Roy Orbison Story celebrates the musical legacy of The Big O.  As well as the toe tapping sound of the music giant that is Roy Orbison, you’ll hear the fantastic Barry Steele perform songs written by Roy Orbison, but never performed by him! The production also features chart busting hits originally made famous by the likes of Jerry Lee Lewis, Jeff Lynne & ELO, George Harrison, Del Shannon and The Spencer Davis Group; Come and see us as there’s plenty of rock with Roy! From Only the Lonely to The Traveling Wilburys, Barry Steele has been stunning audiences across the globe with his uncanny ability to recreate the vocal talents of the legendary Roy Orbison. This unmissable show will take you on a musical journey in time – don’t miss out!”   Tickets £21.50.

  • Licence granted for new Frome nightspot despite local objections

By Local Democracy Reporter Daniel Mumby

A new Frome nightspot can play live music and sell alcohol to its patrons despite concerns raised by neighbouring residents.

Earthaus Property Ltd secured permission in May 2024 to turn four existing flats at 1 Saxonvale into an eight-bedroom hotel, which would overlook the Saxonvale regeneration site in the town centre.

The Saxonvale Ltd has sought to open the ground floor and courtyard area as a café, bar and late night events venue, which could include playing live music and selling pizzas to local customers.

Despite objections from local residents, Somerset Council has agreed to grant the Frome business a licence, meaning it could be up and running within the next few months.

  • Climate adaptation event moves to Cheese and Grain

An event focused on the impact of climate change and how communities can build resilience is moving to the Cheese and Grain on Tuesday 13th May due to high demand for tickets.

Act to Adapt, organised by Frome Town Council, is the first in a series of events and is part of a project co-hosted with Somerset Wildlife Trust and funded by the Somerset Rivers Authority.

Due to strong interest, the venue has been moved to the Cheese and Grain to allow more people to attend.

Frome Town Council’s climate action lead, Matt Mellen, said, “It’s fantastic to see so much interest in the Act to Adapt event, with over 100 people already signed up. We’ve moved the meeting to the Cheese and Grain, so there’s plenty of room for even more people to join us."

  • Free money coaching sessions to launch in Frome

Free money coaching sessions are due to run this month offering support and advice for people managing their finances.

The sessions, which are being run by Holy Trinity Church in partnership with Christians Against Poverty (CAP), will provide expert financial advice in the local community over three weeks from Monday 12th May at 5pm at The Bridge Café on Selwood Road.

“With the soaring cost of living over the last few years, we’ve seen how important it is that people know how to successfully manage their money, whatever their income,” explained Gary Lee, who is organising the new course. “It’s vital that we know how to balance what we have, save for emergencies and stay out of debt.

“Our money coaching course is here to equip people in Frome to do that. We’ll look at things like building and balancing a household budget, prioritising spending and keeping our finances stable into the future."

  • Frome man convicted of murdering woman

A Frome man has been convicted of murdering a woman in Portway on the night she planned to end their relationship last year.

Kieron Goodwin, 33, denied killing 29-year-old Olivia Wood but was found guilty by a jury at Bristol Crown Court after a five-week trial.

He was also convicted of 15 other offences committed against Olivia and three other women over a five-year period, including rape, intentional strangulation and controlling and coercive behaviour.

The court heard Goodwin had been in a relationship with Olivia for fewer than three months when he fatally strangled her on 30th July.

  • Frome’s history kept alive at town’s independent museum

Behind the doors of 1 North Parade, Frome Museum is keeping the town’s history alive with fascinating exhibitions and events for all ages.

Based in the town centre, the museum is independently run by enthusiastic volunteers who are keen to share Frome’s heritage.

The museum’s origins lie in the 1956 Frome Historical Exhibition, which led to the formation of the Frome Society in 1958 — the forerunner to today’s museum. Today, the museum is the proud owner of the iconic Frome Literary and Scientific Institution building, which opened in 1869.

Michael Maggs, who has been chair for the past 18 months, has a personal link to the museum, with one of the exhibitions featuring his grandfather’s pharmacy, formerly based at 20 Bath Street.

  • A new location for Frome’s skatepark? Have your say

Users of the Frome Skatepark are invited to comment on plans for a potential new location for the park.

Frome Town Council will be popping along to the Frome Skatepark Project’s Skate Jam event on Saturday 10th May from 10am to 4pm, where people will be invited to share their views on a new location.

Anyone not able to attend the in-person is invited to share their views on the plans via the Frome Town Council website, at the link at the foot of this article.

Frome Skatepark Project has been fundraising and campaigning for a new skatepark for Frome since 2018. A co-hosted skate jam event in September 2024 indicated support for updates to the existing skatepark as part of a broader conversation about Victoria Park and the Mary Baily Playing Field.

  • Musicians launch Frome’s own record label

A new record label has launched in Frome to support musicians in the town and across the South West.

IL Records has been founded by two local residents, Jonah Brody and Henry Gibbs, who bring professional music industry experience to the venture. The pair are passionate about helping local artists—particularly young musicians—release albums and take the next steps in their careers.

“There are so many musicians in Frome and across the South West,” said Jonah, a professional musician and composer with 20 years’ touring experience, including performing with bands like Depeche Mode as a keyboard and bass player.

“Frome has long been a magnet for artists, a town where creativity is a way of life. IL Records is here to keep that story moving and to make sure the music being made here finds the audience it deserves.

“The main reason for launching the label was because when I was starting out, it was amazing when you found someone who would be like, ‘Wow that’s interesting’ let me give you a boost. When you are starting, you want to get signed by someone but that’s often further down the line or harder these days. I am trying to give back a little bit and give people a little encouragement to keep on doing what they are doing.”
